    Fridays with Bre

Until a month ago, I never drove to Lincoln to see Bre. Instead, I would wait until she came back home to visit with her, in order to give her her space at college; I didn't want her to feel as if I was honing in on her life at school.

Soon, my Bre started asking things like, "How come no one ever comes to see me at school?" and after the third time she mentioned it, I decided that maybe – just maybe – she would like it if I visited her once in a while and took her to lunch.

So I decided to start visiting her every two weeks, and I'd let her choose where we'd eat. What I was not expecting, however, was for my sweet Bre to drag me into Target after lunch so we could spend some quality time together grocery shopping (turns out the cafeteria has "nothing nutritious at all, Mom!"), then on to the mall just in case I needed something (I've never been much of a mall person), and then walking all over downtown Lincoln in the bitter cold, searching for a boutique called Black Market bc she heard it would have amazing things that I would love (and in the process being confronted by a somewhat crazed man, asking if we had a nickel he could have).

Twice I've been to have lunch with my sweet Bre, and twice I've been dragged by my hair all around the capital city. Oh – and twice I've driven back home wondering how it is that I have much less money than I started the day with.

    Tp 2

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
Fool me thrice? that's my Bre.

I am a sucker for that girl.

    Superbowl!

Yesterday was one of the busier days I've seen in a while. When I came downstairs for my morning coffee, there were two notes taped to the microwave for me:

    Tp 1

As you may remember, Sophie is really handy in the kitchen, and is a very eager student.

    Tp 2

And Sabrina? Well… one can't choose their children.

    Tp 3

(Btw, I love how Sophie spelled pico de gallo.)

On the menu were chicken wings with buffalo, honey bbq, and Asian sauces, pico de gallo, guacamole, little smokies, Rotel dip and lime chips, BLT's, Oreo Freeze, and tortilla rollups, which is what Sophie made, all by herself…

    Tp 4

    …In between texting, of course…

    Tp 5

And did I mention birthday cake? We had a belated celebration for Mike, since Bre was able to come home…

    Tp 6

(Btw, I can't thank you all enough for all of your birthday messages to Mike! He got such a kick out of listening to your greetings on the phone – especially those that reminded him that he deserved a bored game or two. My favorite one was the message that said he already had the best birthday gift anyone could hope for: ME! Oh – and the Katherine Hepburn one? Hilarious! You all made Mike's day… again, thank you so very much!)

Bre picked up my camera and started snapping pictures with it. Here's one she got of me in the kitchen, in the middle of cooking and trying to watch a Superbowl commercial at the same time…

    Tp 8

Then Mike decided to pick up Sophie's camera, and they had a photo-taking battle… here was one Bre took…

    Tp 7

And here was one Mike took… when the battle was over, I think Bre ended up snapping the most photos. (Btw, if you're confused, so am I. I'd never in my life witnessed a snap-off until last night.)

    Tp 8

Besides the birthday boy, we had a special guest last night. Those of you who have read my blog long enough and actually stuck with it (thank you very much!) may remember Breanna's high school boyfriend, Cody. He's always been the son I never had (again, besides the birthday boy), so I was thrilled to death when he showed up at halftime. I think someone must have told him there'd be Oreo Freeze…

    Tp 9

    Tp 10

(Mike got nervous bc he heard a camera clicking, and was afraid that photos were being taken without his being in front of the lens.)

    Tp 11

During the halftime performance by the Black-Eyed Peas, Mike and Sophie started dancing in front of the television, trying to mimick the backup dancers. This got quite a laugh out of Cody, who was trying not to spit his food out, but for Bre, it was just another day in the Stewart House…

    Tp 13

    Tp 12

It was a lot of fun having these two friends in my kitchen again. Despite their silliness, it's been a sad time for Cody. His dad, Jeff, was as much a Steelers fan as Mike is a Cowboys fan, and in just a few weeks it will be the one-year mark of his passing.

Football season is over, which is a bummer. I love all the crazy game-day cooking, and I especially look forward to each fall when menfolk start buzzing about fantasy football lineups and the streets start getting traffic-jammed from high school games. It's then that I start organizing all of the menus in my head, and knowing that one day soon we will all be on cholesterol meds bc of it.

    It's all Sophie's fault though.

    Canvas People

I've always wanted some canvas prints of the girls for over my fireplace, but I couldn't decide where to have them done. Since it would be my first "photographic creation," I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something that I wasn't entirely sure would turn out well.

Then I stumbled on Canvas People. And they were having a sale. 🙂 I took a chance, and I'm thrilled that I did!

If you ever want a canvas made, I highly recommend this company. (Right now they're having a Valentine's Day sale.) My only suggestion – before you start creating your canvas – is that you use an uncropped photo, bc when they wrap the print around the frame, you'll lose the outside part of your image. However, they do show you a preview ahead of time so that you can approve your choice or discard it and start over. 🙂 The site is extremely easy to use, and they even offer different photo effects, if that's something you want done.

I had one made of Breanna too, but I'm going to make her pose with hers as soon as she comes home again. 😉

You can run, Bre, but you can't hide. If you want a homecooked meal, you will pose.

    Utah, the Final Chapter

On our last day in the Beehive State, we decided to head into Salt Lake City (since that's where our plane would be taking off) and find a good place to eat. The guy at the ski rental shop recommended this place called Tucanos Brazilian Grill, so after following the instructions given to us by the lady-who-lives-in-my-phone, that's exactly where we ended up.

    Tuc tp 1

This is one of the most unique places I've ever eaten! They have these colorful markers at each table, and as long as the green end is up, a server will come to your table over and over again, each time with a different type of meat for you to add to your plate.

    Tuc tp 4

In case you can't tell from the way Mike's tongue is situated, that green side was up for a really long time.

    Tuc tp 5

He brought us barbecued chicken on one trip, and prime rib on the next. He showed up with grilled pineapple and honey-glazed ham, and then it was garlic seared steak. It wasn't until he brought us the chicken hearts that we realized we needed to, at some point, put the red end up.

    Tuc tp 6

I can proudly say we all tried a chicken heart. And in my opinion, it tasted a lot like frog legs, which I've never had, but heard that they taste like chicken.

Btw, they have an excellent salad and soup bar too!

    Tuc tp 2

    Tuc tp 3

Soon our server headed over with the dreaded dessert tray.

    Tuc tp 7

Mike absolutely insisted on getting the raspberry cheesecake, so I told him to stop whining and order it already.

    Tuc tp 9

Here's Sabrina with a mouth full of what she chose…

    Tuc tp 8

And no matter where we are, Sophie manages to find plain vanilla ice cream with caramel syrup.

    Tuc tp 10

Me? Well, Mike was supposed to share that raspberry cheesecake with me, but I got nary a bite. Okay, fine, I got several, but what I really wanted was a little something I like to call The Plasma:

    Tuc tp 11

What a fantastic place to eat! We'll definitely be stopping there again, the next time we're in Utah.

I leave you with one more TubCam. This one is Sabrina's, and she took it all by herself on her cell phone. Hold on tight!

    I Spy

I didn't think I was going to be posting again until I returned to Omaha, but I've decided to pre-blog and schedule this to be posted for this morning. It's actually 10:25 pm right now, and I'm almost finished packing. I spent most of the day answering emails and mailing orders and running errands, so I'm taking a break!

I'd like to show you a scene from our home on Christmas morning. The room is in complete disarray, furniture shoved everywhere but where it should be, yet I'm still going to post this photo. My mother will be horrified.

Let's play a game of I Spy, shall we?

I spy Sophie's plaid pajama pants, handed down to her by Sabrina.

I spy a girl hoping that another present will appear under the tree for her.

I spy a woman in a new Vera Bradley apron, in desperate need of caffeine and another present.

I spy a girl in a Nebraska hoodie, angry that she didn't get the new Vera Bradley apron.

I don't spy the father in this family, bc he's taking the photo.

    I Spy tp

Okay, now I'm done posting! See you soon!

    The Queen of Tween

After the kids are off to school and I've come home to begin the day's online shopping cleaning, I generally check in the girls' rooms to see that they've made their beds and picked up their things from the morning.

    I'm usually disappointed. Moving on.

Last week, I peered into Sophie room past her door sign to discover something that stopped me up short…

(Some of you may remember her door sign…)

    Tp 1

    Tp 2

    Her first teeny-bopper idol poster.

    Tp 3

This discovery prompted me to look around her room at all of the little things that reflect her personality… and I realized that she is changing from a sweet, small, Barbie-doll-loving girl into a bolder, somewhat taller, Bieber-doll-loving tween.

    Exhibit A:

Her brightly-colored barrettes have been replaced by tubes of mascara and wild nail polishes…

    Tp 7

    Exhibit B:

Her much-loved Wacky-Bands are stored in a container underneath even more mascara, instead of on her wrists, waiting to be traded to other 5th-graders.

    Tp 6

    Exhibit C:

    Thumbtacks, thumbtacks everywhere!

    Tp 4

    Exhibit D:

This is what she calls a "VERY organized" desk.

    Tp 10

    Exhibit E:

She's traded in reading her homework for teen celebrity gossip.

    Tp 9

There are, however, several traits she has held on to that remind me of the sweetness that is Sophie's personality.

    Exhibit A:

She lovingly takes care of Ruby.

    Tp 5

    Exhibit B:

She has a heck of a time memorizing Bible verses, but never gives up trying.

    Tp 8

    Exhibit C:

She loves every snowglobe she receives, and gladly shares the memory associated with each one.

    Tp 13

    Tp 12

This is one of her favorites.. I picked it up for her in an Arizona airport. It's full of sand instead of water! (And I love that the little girl in her is always afraid that the snake will one day get out.)

    Tp 11

    Exhibit D:

My favorite. This is her best friend, Bonkers, and his little friend, Lulu. They have a very special place next to Sophie when I tuck her in each night. If he falls off the bed, she squeals, "Bonks! Oh, Bonks! Are you okay?"

    Tp 14

What a fun age she is. Ten-going-on-thirteen.

    Tp 15

Sophie, you are a joy. And if by some remote chance any of your friends ever read this blog, then you can tell them I was totally joking about you and Bonkers.

    Desperate Times

As exciting as the snow was when it first fell earlier in December, the ice has left us all slipping and sliding and wishing for either the Morton's Fairy to arrive or a fresh snowfall to cover it all up. One of Mike's and Sophie's favorite things to do is to go sledding, but the weather hasn't cooperated. So today they struck out for the driveway to go icing instead.

    (Nevermind the filthy vehicles…)

    Ice tp 6

    Ice tp 5

I bet that curb felt good…

    Ice tp 4

    Ice tp 3

If Mike acts like this on our driveway, imagine what he would do sliding down Everest.

    Ice tp 2

If they can make it back to the top, they'll go for round 2…

    Ice tp 1

    And they're off!

    Ice tp 7

Yes, Mike, you are the champion icer in the family.

    Ice tp 8

    Ice tp 9

It's been three hours since I last saw them last. I imagine they're on the Iowa border about now.

    Ice tp 10

Which means I don't have to play bored games tonight.

    Flakes

The weather was perfect for ice skating this week, so we decided to head downtown to visit Mike, who was working off-duty at the ConAgra Park ice rink. Since Sabrina's boyfriend is back from college, she convinced him to come along, despite his protests that he could not skate. But he was a very good sport about it, and he and Sabrina and Sophie all had a great time…

    Tp 1

It was so much fun to watch them slowly gain confidence on their skates, and then eventually start racing each other. I'm not sure what was going on in this picture, but I thought it was funny…

    Tp 2

Mike brought Sophie some hot chocolate, but as soon as he approached the railing, another child decided to strike up a conversation. This is never a good idea if one wants Sophie to stay in a good mood; she is very possessive of her dad, and she would prefer other children go talk to their own dads.

    Tp 3

As far as Sophie is concerned, she feels that if her dad isn't going to be busy bringing her hot chocolate refills, then he needs to stay back with the other cop, away from curious children…

    Tp 4

Even though the focus is in the wrong place in this photo, I still found it amusing… poor, unsuspecting little sister!

    Tp 5

    Bre watched from the sidelines…

    Tp 7

Sabrina and Nate posed for a picture, but we found that Nate turns into quite a ham when he's got a camera pointed at him…

    Tp 8

Sabrina scolded him, and then demanded that he pose properly…

    Tp 9

    Tp 10

My favorite thing about the night was watching Sabrina's face. She was so animated, exactly like she was when she was 4 years old, and we'd ask her if she wanted to go to the zoo…

    Tp 11

    Tp 12

Although I coughed my way through most of the night, these three hooligans made it a fun time…

    Tp 13

    Happy Winter!

    How Did She Do That?

Sophie has been terribly under the weather lately, coughing and sneezing and getting more than her share of aww-poor-baby hugs. Since she was tired of laying around, she decided to help out with the Christmas spirit around here and came up with a most beautiful decoration, now hanging from our dining room ceiling…

    Tp 4

    Tp 2

    Tp 1

    Tp 3

I love having this little elf around.

Btw, Mike is also really sick, but he doesn't know how to make cool snowflakes. He does, however, remind me of an overgrown elf.

    Pose

Yesterday Sophie got her hair cut in a "long bob," as she put it. I love how it turned out, and told her I wanted to take her picture on the front porch, since the pink sky was so bright and pretty. She tried involving the little pooches, but that didn't really work out very well…

    Tp 7

    Tp 6

    Tp 4

    Soon Tasha showed up…

    Tp 1

…and tried to figure out how to do the supermodel pose…

    Tp 2

But each time she tried, the same embarrassing thing would happen:

"One eye on the camera, one eye on the Yorkie. Blast it all, I give up."…

    Tp 5

It was exhausting for both of them…

    Tp 3

Eventually the pooches began their jealous fussing at each other, so Sophie decided to go it alone…

    Tp 9

    Which was fine with me!

    Tp 10

I love your new haircut, Sophie! And I love you!

Btw, I wished my sister a Happy Birthday yesterday, but I'd like to wish her another one here. Happy Birthday, Audrey!
