    Vintage Christmas

Recently my mom and I headed out to one of our favorite little shops called Weathered and Worn. The shop was having its Christmas open house, so we decided to visit and see if there was anything either of us "needed."

One of the things I always tell myself I'm going to purchase each year – but never end up doing it – is a vintage-y Christmas ornament. I have to laugh at how so many things are made to look old. I imagine if I were around in the 40's or 50's and saw something in the store that was beat up or tarnished or chipped, I'd be aghast and never shop there again.

(I also know that if someone were to tell me back in 1984 that kids in the 2000's would dress in clothing from the '80's and call it a Halloween costume, I'd be aghast at that too.)

Anyway, this year was finally the year I purchased a vintage-y Christmas ornament, and I love it! Here it is:

Mom got the coolest vintage-y post card made into an ornament, and I did my best to make some more when I got home. Mine didn't turn out nearly as well as the store-bought one, but they were fun to make.

Here are the backs of a couple…

They were super easy! All you need is some paper and chipboard and ribbon, and anything you want to make it look old.

Now I'm ready for Christmas to get here, and I haven't even taken down the Halloween decorations.

    Enjoy your weekend!

    Off With Their Heads

Sophie has had quite a head cold these past few days, but that didn't stop her from performing her royal duties and donning her Red Queen (from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland) costume to go trick-or-treating last night with her dad. If there's anything these two love, it's getting into their characters.

They came back with loads of hydrogenated kernel oils, soy lecithin, and artificial flavors, all in brightly colored wrappers. (I remember when I was a kid, and they used this stuff called natural sugar that was really bad for you.)

I hope you had a wonderful Halloween night! Mine was fine until I suddenly realized one very frightening, heart-stopping, blood-curdling fact:

There is, indeed, a bored game for every occasion.

    W.W.M.D.?

Last week I had the task of dog-sitting my parents' hound, Major, while my parents were visiting the rest of our family out of state. Before leaving town, my mother had made sure to pull out all the autumnal stops, and when I turned the key and walked through my parents' door, I was immediately greeted by the familiar smell of home – warm vanilla and caramel and apples. My parents' home always smells the same (delicious!), and the way my mother decorates for the season is so cozy, no one ever wants to leave!

So I got it in my head that I, too, wanted to decorate for autumn, and promptly headed to Hobby Lobby. I mostly wanted a new centerpiece for my dinette table, but since I am very much centerpiece-challenged, this endeavor proved most difficult for me. "I wish I could just put things somewhere, and make them work like my mom does!" I thought. Seriously, my mom could scrape a dead racoon off the street and turn it into the most astounding, beautiful floral arrangement you've ever seen.

Not that she'd go anywhere near a dead racoon. Or the street, for that matter, since she's always home quilting or stitching or working or texting my dad to say that she's pretty sure he wants Arby's for dinner.

Anyway, when I was perusing the aisles in Hobby Lobby, I finally decided to stop over-thinking everything, and just BUY something already. I have a tendency to walk around the store with something I love, and then by the time I'm finished walking the store, I've thought up 35 different reasons why I shouldn't buy it, and I end up leaving empty-handed. I was determined this was not going to be the case this time, and I ended up purchasing a 3-tiered stand that I honestly had no clue what to do with. "But it looks like something my mom would buy," I thought. So I bought it.

As I drove home, I began thinking about what my mom would put on it, and then my buyer's remorse started turning into something a little happier… Here's what I ended up with, and I really like it!

As a matter of fact, I liked it so well, I took pictures from every angle!

After I was finished with the table, I moved on to the rest of the house. I decided I would decorate with all the Halloween models that were collecting dust in my dungeon basement. I had to do some rummaging bc they're all stuffed away in boxes, but I managed to find quite a few and got them upstairs.

Btw, this is the newest addition to my Boney Bunch figures (truth be told, I only have 3 of them), standing in front of Garden of Eerie…

    Fall tp 11

Amos Figg… (his wife, Tillie, is hanging just above)…

    Fall tp 3

(Btw, Mom got me hooked on these holiday candles by Bath and Body Works. This is one of my favorites! I also purchased a few more in Christmas scents, but I'll wait for the weather to turn brittle before I light them.)

    Fall tp 2

I even placed a couple samplers in the bathroom. I thought Mehitable's epitaph was fitting for the back of the toilet…

    Fall tp 8

(There's my first Boney Bunch figure, above, gifted to me by my mom as a fall present a few years ago!)

And here is Salem Sisters II on the wall nearest the sink…

    Fall tp 7

Sophie loves the seasonal towels in my parents' bathrooms, so I decided to surprise her with one…

    Fall tp 6

However, she decided to hang it on top of the crown towel my friend Chris got for me, which almost got the little Halloween towel returned to the store. 😉 Just kidding, Sophie!

Finally, here's one of the Blackbird Designs ornaments I stitched a few years ago to hang on my wire tree in the entryway. I have a few of them, and I love them all! (Who doesn't love Blackbird Designs?)

    Fall tp 9

I had so much fun decorating this year! The pumpkins are on the front porch, the mums are blooming their burgundy best, and I even hung my Thimbleberries quilted pumpkin doorhanger on the front door. I can't wait for Sophie to start bringing home her artwork from school… the days of fingerpainting projects are gone, sadly, but I'm sure she'll have a new school masterpiece for the refrigerator this year. 🙂

I'm sure Mom would be proud of my fall decorating this year. I had fun with it, just like she always seems to. As a matter of fact, the only time I didn't see her having fun with decorating was when I was very little, and I'd bring home my school masterpieces.

But that's what my therapist is for.

    Happy Decorating!

P.S. My sister got into the season, too!

    Love and Joy

I got my Just Cross Stitch holiday ornament issue yesterday, so I guess that means I can share these now. I really enjoyed designing this ornament, and was very happy to be invited to submit one this year…

The only problem is, every single time I see it I immediately start singing the Christmas carol in my head, for at least an hour afterward. I suppose that's okay though, bc I really love Christmas carols.

Love and Joy to you  – and Happy Memorial Day too!

ETA: Thank you, Bonnie, for pointing out to me that it is NOT Memorial Day today. It's LABOR Day! Oh good grief. See what happens when I blog without caffeine?

    Celebration

This year we spent our 4th of July at my parents' house, and my sister, brother in-law, and niece drove up from Dallas to visit as well. We had a fantastic cookout, and after many moons spent in adulthood, I finally made my very first potato salad.

It was a success! (Thanks, Mom, for all the compliments!) However, I'll have to wait and share the recipe the NEXT time I make it, bc I didn't take a photo of it. 🙂

We also had some ribschickencoleslawyadayadayada, but the potato salad… to die for.(teehee)

Okay, if I'm being honest, the ribs and chicken were smoked, and absolutely mouthwatering. Mom makes the best cole slaw in the west, the baked beans were amazing (who knows what she put in those things), the toasted garlic bread was outstanding, and we had the usual array of desserts as well.

And this was the only picture I got with any food in it:

After dinner, we went outside for all kinds of fun. 🙂

    Memorial Day Cookout

My parents invited us over for one of their fabulous cookouts this evening, and as usual it was… well… fabulous. My dad smoked some ribs and chicken, and Mom clearly spent the entire day in the kitchen. Deviled eggs, potato salad, homemade bbq sauce, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, homemade ice cream, caramel nut bars, and who knows what else! All we provided was a cake and our appetites. (That's what my mom always says when I ask her if I can bring anything: "Just your appetites!" she says.)

Mike brought over a new lawn game… something about monkeys and balls. I never did figure it out.

    Mday tp 12

Maybe it was monkey bars and balls? Oh, I don't know. But Sophie and her friend Jenny had fun with it.

    Mday tp 10

    Here's Major Pain. He's Friday's brother, and such a sweetheart…

    Mday tp 3

Sabrina spent the better part of the night spoiling him…

    Mday tp 7

    Mday tp 8

    Mday tp 9

Sophie let me take her picture while Jenny was hiding for a game of Hide-and-Go-Seek (plus it gave her an excuse to open her eyes while she was counting)…

    Mday tp 6

Mom always has the best bowls and pitchers and fresh garden flowers!

    Mday tp 1

(I don't need pretty pitchers bc my kids just drink out of the kitchen faucet and Mike drinks straight from the milk jug, which annoys the frapp out of me, but he doesn't really mind.)

This is the only picture Mom would let me take of her; she's coming through the door from the deck with a plateful of ribs…

    Mday tp 2

The peonies from my parents' back yard are so beautiful…

    Mday tp 4

Here's Bean on the deck outside…I'm going to miss her so badly when she leaves for Germany in a couple of days…

    Mday tp 11

My mom bought these really cool food tents for outside. I'd never heard of them before, and I loved them!

    Mday tp 5

Mike thought they made great mosquito-net hats, which probably annoyed the frapp out of my mother.

    Mday tp 15

    Mday tp 14

There's not a whole lot that annoys my dad. He usually keeps his thoughts to himself.

    Mday tp 13

The weather was beautiful, Mike left the bored games at home, and the food was absolutely delicious. The whole evening was just…well, fabulous.

    I Heart My Family.

I had a lovely Mothers Day, and I hope you did too. 🙂

    Mothers day tp

One of the things I did to help my family celebrate me (haha) was to make them their favorite dessert… Oreo Freeze. If you'd like the recipe, I'm posting it just a click away at Four Seasons Cafe.

And after that, I'm off to drink some coffee and stitch!

OH! And before I forget, Sophie wanted me to please let anyone who will listen know that she has finally updated her blog. 😉  (Is that okay, Sophie?)
