    Work it, Girl

A few days ago, Sophie and I walked Mike out to his car before he left for work for the evening. I noticed that the sun was shining beautifully on Sophie's hair, and I asked her if she minded if I took her picture. She agreed, and then I asked her if she wanted me to take lots of pictures of her. "You mean, like you do the girls when they're posing?" she asked. "Sure!" I replied. At this, she was happy, so off we went to a nearby park owned by a local nursery.

We had a fun time, although there were a few too many frogs in the pond for her liking. And she kept making me walk in front of her, so I could clear out any grasshoppers before she passed by.

Here are just a few of the pictures I took that day. I love you, Sophie!

At one point, Sophie told me to look up…when I did, there were hundreds of marquis butterflies! It was magical! This was the only one I could capture…

    A girl can dream, can't she? 😉

(It's just too bad I don't always dream in focus! Ah well, like one of my very favorite photographers, Karen Russell, says: "Photos don't have to be technically perfect, as long as they're emotionally perfect."  I like that.)

    Enjoy your weekend!

    Hodgepodge

As most of you know by now (bc of my gushing on Twitter and Facebook), Breanna has started her own cross-stitch designing business under the name Hodgepodge Cottage. The name she finally settled on couldn't be more perfect! (She started out with Frilly Lilly, but found that the domain name had already been claimed by someone… then she jokingly called herself Blueberry Lane Samplers as a mock of Plum Street Samplers… but considering the wide variety of her interests in life, I think "hodgepodge" describes her perfectly.)

Breanna has always been a creative soul, finding great satisfaction in writing, drawing, music, and fabric. Last summer she discovered sewing, and spent a lot of time with my mom, who taught her how to quilt. A few years before, when she was in high school and was grounded from her social life (ha! I miss those days…), she was so bored, she decided to learn how to cross stitch. And now here we are! 🙂

She will be debuting her first design at the St. Charles Needlework Market on September 24th, and I couldn't be happier for her! Here are some close-ups of the three flags she designed…

This one was stitched by her Meems (my mom)…

    Hf tp 2

The flag "pole" is actually a wooden skewer used for grilling, painted black. We then used tapestry nails to anchor down the pole, with a small amount of tacky glue applied underneath.

    Hf tp 7

Here, you can see the underside of the flag pole…

    Hf tp 5

Since double-sided tape is my very best friend when it comes to finishing (please don't tell anyone that or I'll just deny it), that's what was used to apply the ric-rac. And then a few more tapestry nails were used to embellish the remaining sides.

    Hf tp 3

Here is the one that Breanna stitched…

    Hf tp 10

I can't believe she stitched it all by herself! :)  And the cheery purple trim and bright backing fabric are so…hodgepodge! I love all the happy colors she chose.

    Hf tp 9

Finally, here is the one that I stitched for her…

    Hf tp 4

And if the front is too "dark" for you… check out the underside!

    Hf tp 8

If I remember correctly, I believe that fabric came from Kwilty Kim. 🙂

If you happen to be going to Market, you can check out Bre's models in the Kelmscott Designs suite. Each of the models are stitched on 32 ct. Vintage Pearled Barley (Lakeside Linens) and they use Crescent Colours cotton floss in Blackbird, Plymouth Rock, Antique Lace, Tangerine, Bamboo, Eve's Leaves, and Mulled Berries.

Congratulations, Bre! I love you soooooooooooooooo much!

    ‘Tis the Season!

I absolutely love the start of football season – high school, college, pro… not necessarily bc I understand the rules of the game very well or I'm ready for Fantasy Football drafting to begin, but rather for the simple excitement it brings to seemingly everyone – young and old alike. Perfect strangers will stand around in the gas station, chatting about this play or that, and sports bars everywhere are filled with menfolk who have donned their favorite jerseys.

Sophie is a huge fan of football season too, mostly for the hundreds of spicy garlic chicken wings she and her dad will consume at Buffalo Wild Wings during gametime(s). And although the high school games don't offer chicken wings at the concessions stand, there is plenty of popcorn and candy to share with friends – which is exactly what Sophie did last weekend.

She and two of her gal pals decided they were going to give themselves makeovers and get dressed up in Wildcats colors to cheer on their future high school's team.

    Here is her "before" picture…

    Game tp 12

And here is her "after" picture!

    Game tp 11

She then realized that tickets cost money, so she sheepishly approached her dad, who is always ready to help his homegirl out…

    Game tp 9

However, since Sophie is a sensitive soul, she felt it necessary to ask, "Are you sure, Dad?"

    Game tp 10

And since Sophie is a clever child, she never asks a question without first knowing the answer. 😉

So she happily walked a couple of houses down to meet up with her gal pals, cash in hand.

    Saturday Reblog

A little while ago I was browsing through my old Xanga blog for a particular picture, and I ran across a couple of Breanna's "Coaster Cams," taken when our family rode roller coasters in Adventureland, Disney World, and Worlds of Fun. As I sat here watching them, I started laughing so hard, remembering what a crazy girl my Breanna can be.

Expedition Everest Coaster Cam from Paulette Stewart on Vimeo.

Amusement parks are getting much more strict about allowing cameras on board their roller coasters, so I'm not sure I'll have the pleasure of being Bre's coaster companion again.

But it was a fun ride while it lasted. 😉

(Btw, I never did find that photo I was looking for.)

    No, Nein, Non.

When Breanna and Sabrina were little, they were involved in pretty much everything available to them – soccer, cheerleading, swim team, piano, band, choir, gymnastics, book club, and dance. And I'm sure there were other things. Eventually, I had to start phasing out many of their activities bc I was just plain tired of living in the car, and I'm sure they were too.

Guess what. It's Sophie's turn. Only this time, I'm actually saying NO to things, and so far Sophie is handling that just fine. Still, her schedule is quite busy, which is something she's not used to. My Sophie has always been a homebody, and very content to be so. But recently, she's decided to add a few things to her daily routine besides snuggling up to her mom on the couch…

    1. She tried out for the school's swing choir and made it! 🙂

1a. I said NO to piano lessons, bc although she SWORE to me that she'd practice faithfully and never complain about having to go to her lessons, I know this to be false. Experience is the best teacher, and I got plenty of experience last year when I had to drag her to Mrs. Nabel's house every Thursday night.

    2. She is playing soccer for a second season, and moved from a recreational league to a little more challenging one…

    Soccer tp 1

2a. I said NO to gymnastics, bc the last time she was in gymnastics, she was angry that they expected her to learn a proper somersault instead of getting straight to the heart of why she joined in the first place: to learn a triple round-off backhandspring with a full-out 360 twist at the end. (Breanna, please don't shoot me for not using correct tumbling lingo.)

    3. She joined the YMCA's volleyball team again…

(There she is, going for the ball in the background.)

    Vball tp 1

3a. I said NO to cheerleading bc the last time she was in a tumbling class, she was furious that they wanted her to learn a proper somersault instead of getting straight to the heart of why she wanted to be a cheerleader in the first place: to do a quadruple round-off backhandspring while being thrown in the air by her team of bases and landing in an arabesque atop a 4-tiered pyramid. (Again, Breanna, wipe that look off your face.)

    4. She joined band, opting to learn the clarinet…

    Clarinet tp 1

    Clarinet tp 3

    Clarinet tp 2

4a. I said NO to orchestra bc I already owned a $1200 clarinet and didn't feel like coughing up twice that for a violin. Plus, I feel sorry for the poor horse that gets his tail hairs pulled just to string the instrument.

    5. The reason her hair is in a crazy 'do in her clarinet photos is bc she tried out for the swim team and made it! She's been on the wait list to try out for over a year, and has been practicing as much as she can during that entire time, preparing herself for the one day she'd get a chance to make the team.

5a. I said NO to horseback riding lessons bc I didn't want her getting any more ideas about violin lessons.

Btw, Sophie is also in Student Council, which means she has to attend monthly meetings at school. Today she ran for the Student Council President, and had to give a speech in front of 81 students. If I was an eligible voter, I'd have most certainly voted YES for Sophie! (I did ask her if I could come watch her speech, to which she replied, "Well… umm… it's just that… you're a mom."

So that's what it feels like to be told NO. Okay, I can handle that – no biggie. But if she continues to tell me NO, I'll just tell her how much fun I used to have watching Breanna do those quintuple round-off backhandsprings with double-fulls, landing atop her base's shoulders just after doing an airborne Hercules, all the while playing her violin with a riding crop.

And then Breanna would have to hurry and get ready for piano lessons.)

    Beam Me Up. Now.

Mike and Sophie LOVE building Lego sets. It's one of their favorite pastimes. Usually they end up getting somewhat persnickety with each other, given all the tiny details that need to be tended to…

Mike: "Where's the little one-piece thing that goes in this spot?"

Soph: "WHAT one-piece thing? The directions say you need the half-piece thing."

Mike: "What are you talking about? There's no half-piece thing, Soph!"

Soph: "RIGHT HERE, DAD. IT SAYS IT RIGHT HERE."

Mike: "That says HAIR-piece, Soph. The little dude needs a HAIR-piece."

    Soph: "Yeah, so do you."

Mike: "You'd better check yourself. Now where's the half-piece thing that goes in this spot?"

This time, however, they got along quite well. Most likely it's because the Lego set they were playing had to do with a cool alien creature and a spaceships, and if there's anything Mike loves, it's alien creatures and spaceships.

    And their sound effects…

Okay, time to get serious. There's work to be done…

    Lego tp 4

    Lego tp 5

    Lego tp 7

    And the ship is finished!

    Lego tp 8

"Here, Soph, lemme see it. Look at this. Bvvvvrrrrrrrrrzzzzzzzzzzzzvvvvrrrvvvvbpppttffffffff…"

    Lego tp 9

    …"rrrrfffvvvvvvvvtttttttzzzzzzzzvvvvvvffffffpffffffpffffffttttbbbbbrrrrrrr."

    Soph: "Dad."

    Mike: "rrrvvv…."

    Soph: "DAD."

Mike: "bvvvvvv… oh no, we're losing power! Bvvvvvvvvvvvvv…."

Soph: "Okay, that's enough, Dad. You're not taking this seriously, dude."

    Lego tp 10

Sophie soon realized that there was nothing in the galaxy that could stop her alien spaceship-driving father, so she decided to join him in an alien battle.

Remind me – the next time Mike's 8th birthday rolls around – to get him something sensible, like a wrench or something.

On second thought, that would be bad news for my pots and pans. And my ears.

Say Yes to the (Homecoming) Dress

The big Homecoming dance is in just a few weeks, so Sabrina, Sophie, and I decided to go dress shopping. After roaming the mall wings for what seemed like days, I plopped down on the fitting room floor and decided to rest while Sabrina tried on some dresses.  I hadn't planned on taking photos, but I grabbed my little purse camera and tried to take some (from the floor, mind you – I was NOT about to stand up) in the very poorly-lit fitting room…

    Dress tp 5

Sophie's job is usually to take out the rejected dresses and bring in some new ones, but this year she decided to have her own fun…

    Dress tp 1

(Since short is in again this year, Sophie's dress would have been entirely too long!)

    Dress tp 3

It looks like girl-style cummerbunds are all the rage… both of the girls loved this pink number…

    Dress tp 4

    Dress tp 2

    Dress tp 6

If you'd care to find out which dress Sabrina chose, don't forget to check back around the 26th! Unless I'm too exhausted to blog about it, that is… I offered to host a pot-luck dinner before the dance, and I'm afraid all those kids might take me up on it!

    Big Red

My Breanna went back to Lincoln to start her sophomore year a couple of weeks ago, and while I won't miss the daily queries as to whether I'll be joining her at the gym or not (to "get her fitness on," as she put it), I will miss her joining me in the living room for coffee and stitching. (I got my fitness off quite some time ago.)

Mike loaded into the cars all of the STUFF we packed to move her back into the dorms, and then he did what he could to get her day started off right: he pumped and purchased her tank of gas for her…

    Unl tp 9

Then we hit the road and arrived in Lincoln a little while later, where Mike unloaded from the cars and hauled up to her room all of the STUFF Breanna and I had packed to get her moved back into the dorms. 🙂

While Mike made his many trips back and forth to the parking lot, we girls got her clothing put away and her bed put together and her decorations put up. See those three bottles on top of the desk? They're Yankee Candle's new Halloween tea lite holders, and Bre loved them so much she decided to display them immediately…

    Unl tp 7

(The lone popsicle Christmas ornament hanging next to her Abbey Road poster puts a smile on my face. And don't you love the coordinating pillow cases my mom made for her? And that row-by-row quilt was the very first quilt I ever made.)

There's her roomie, Sarah, working hard at getting her desk in order…

    Unl tp 8

This was the best part of her whole room (teeheehee)…

    Unl tp 4

And I'm not sure why she needed this particular coffee cup. I mean, I don't get it. Surely she's joking, right?

    RIGHT?

Pshaw, of course she is! Whew.

    Unl tp 3

No, Mike, you can't move in. And somebody please tell him to put his Hook 'em Horns sign down before someone hurts him with a corncob.

    Unl tp 6

When I bought this doormat for Bre, it seemed funny at the time. But now, after reading her coffee cup again, I'm not so sure. I'll need to check to see if I still have that receipt…

    Unl tp 5

We said our goodbyes and I remembered how this time, last year, I got such a horrible lump in my throat I couldn't speak. I also remember Mike telling me that if I needed him to turn the car around so I could go give Bre one more hug, he'd do it. But I managed.

Now I only get lumps in my throat when she shows up on the doorstep with 14 loads of laundry.

    Unl tp 2

    Unl tp 1

Have a great year, Bre! We love you so much!

From Finland (and Texas) with Love

What a surprise I received in the mail last week! I was truly touched by such a kind gesture from Pirjo of Finland… Look at all these lovely things she sent me from her country (and I can't wait to take a look at that dvd)!

    Pirjo tp 5

Oh my gosh, those Smoothie candies are very addictive…

    Pirjo tp 4

Or should I say "were" very addictive. 🙂

And look what she made for Sophie! Soph loved it!

    Pirjo tp 3

And look what else Sophie is having fun with…

    Pirjo tp 6

    A reindeer! From Finland!

Did you see that hand-written note Pirjo enclosed in the prior photo? Well, as happy as I felt when I was reading it, something stopped me up short…

    Pirjo tp 7

Did you catch it? Let me help you out, just in case you didn't…

    Pirjo tp 8

THE 'G' WORD!!!!!!!! PIRJO, I THOUGHT FINNISH PEOPLE HATED GAMES!!! Okay, I didn't really think Finnish people hated games, but I was hoping they did. Needless to say, Mike was positively thrilled to find out that a woman all the way in Finland was thinking of him. Well, he's got a woman right here in Nebraska (with Smoothie candies stuck in her front teeth) who's thinking of him, all right: thinking how she's going to pretend that game got lost in the mail, should it ever arrive.

Moving on to more lovely things… look what else Pirjo sent!

    Pirjo tp 2

Much of what Pirjo mailed was tucked away inside this handmade bag. :)  And I have no idea where she got the notion that I like crowns (teeheehee), but what a grand surprise this was!

    Pirjo tp 1

What a sweet, generous person you are, Pirjo. I thank you from the bottom to the top of my heart. And so does Sophie! 😉

But wait! Joann from the great state of Texas sent my Sophie a little sumpm-sumpm too! (Good grief, all my mother's friends ever did for me was tell my mom, "You know, no offense, but Paulette could really use some discipline.")

    Joann tp 1

If you have school-age kids, then you've no doubt heard of Silly/Wacky Bands. They're the new Beanie Babies, which were the new Cabbage Patch Dolls, which were the new "Vote Mike for Class President" buttons that were all the rage in the 1960's. (Or was Mike fibbing about that?) Except I refuse to camp out overnight for them and beat off other crazed moms who are after the limited edition ones. Anyway, here are just a few of the Wacky Bands Sophie has, including some of the ocean-themed ones that Miss Joann from Texas sent to her. Thank you sooooo much, Joann! Sophie was absolutely thrilled!

I'm disappointed that I haven't been able to post much lately – I'd been meaning to get on here and thank you (and post some more reader finishes) much sooner, but our days around here have been very busy since school started – and noisy! We're getting some things done around the house and the contractors are out before the roosters crow, waking us all up with the hammering and painting. This was what I saw when I walked into my dinette area this morning…

    Paint tp 1

All of the framed samplers in my house are hanging crookedly on their walls now, but that's okay. There's work to be done, so hammer away, contractor-men! Even though it drives the Yorkie crazy and she does nothing but bark for 9 hours straight.

I have a facial tic now.

(Btw, before I posted that last sentence, I had typed "I have a facial tick now.")

Thank you again, Pirjo! And thank you for the Wacky Bands, Joann!

    Dog Duds

When we were in Kansas this past time, Sophie spied an entire doggy wardrobe that I had stuffed into a bag to be hauled out to the garage sale. She pulled out each piece – sweaters, raincoats, a "10 Karat Dog" shirt – and cried, "Mom! What are you thinking, putting these in the garage sale!?" I explained to her that I don't really care to dress dogs bc I think God blessed them with the perfect outfit just as they are, to which she replied, "But what about when it snows! Look how cute these are!! Oh please let me have them, please!"

    I gave in.

    Sophie and Missy tp

I'm sure the Yorkie thinks Sophie has lost her mind, given the forecast for today. But something tells me that as long as Sophie carries her around like the 10-Karat dog the Yorkie believes herself to be, then all is forgiven.
