    Bumpkin Fun

When the girls were really little, one of my favorite things to do each fall was to take them to the pumpkin patch for hay-rack rides, pumpkin-picking, and sugar cookies. Many years later, that simple pumpkin patch has grown into an enormous country-folk attraction, offering everything from haunted houses to pony rides, with hot dogs and turkey legs (and sugar cookies) at every turn.

Last week was the opening week of Vala's Pumpkin Patch, and since the weather was perfect, we 5 Stewarts headed out.

The girls found a plastic duck race wherein each participant had to pump water as fast as she could to get her duck to "swim" the fastest, all the way to the end…

After the race, we realize that Mike had disappeared… and soon found him several yards away, stuffing a hot dog into his face before any of us could as him to buy us one…

    Valas tp 13

Sabrina and Sophie decided to give the giant jumping pillow a try next…

    Valas tp 14

This one cracks me up, bc Sabrina looks like an underwater genie…

    Valas tp 15

Oh, the perils of long hair!

    Valas tp 16

    Valas tp 17

Again, we asked, "Where is Mike?"

"Where is our loving, strong father?"

"Where is that stud-muffin manly-man husband of mine?"

    Valas tp 20

I honestly believe he had no idea we had found him.

Sabrina and Sophie decided to join him, and I had to laugh at my Sabrina… she waffles bw being the fun-loving child that still wants to play on a jungle gym, yet when she realizes she'll be 17 soon, she decides that if she's going to play on a jungle-gym, she must look glamorous while doing so…

Mike, on the other hand, doesn't know that he passed 17 many years ago.

    Valas tp 21

    Valas tp 19

I noticed a man sitting on a bench nearby, singing to his baby. It was the most precious thing, watching him in his own world, completely charmed by the bundle in his arms. Although everything in me was telling me to hush, I decided to ask him if I could take his photo. He was a little startled, but he agreed when I told him that I just thought it was the sweetest thing in the world to see, and I wasn't a crazed stalker…

    Valas tp 22

Of course, maybe he wouldn't have been so startled if I hadn't looked like this:

    Valas tp 28

Of course I'm kidding. This was inside a little shop – with LOTS of orange lights! – and we were all having fun trying on masks and looking at the creepy souvenirs.  Although the background is the only thing in focus, I like it bc of the woman's expression behind us as Sabrina is sneaking up on me…

(See there? You have no need to fear the Grim Reaper, bc that's all he's going to do to you anyway.)

Mike suddenly showed up, when he realized someone was taking pictures…

    Valas tp 27

Sabrina's second attempt at terrorizing a family member (it's hard to see, but she's wearing an enormous gnarled hand)…

    Valas tp 26

Bre was happily trying on Halloween accessories behind Sophie…

Here is the photo that was intended for my October banner, but the light in the shop was too difficult to work with…

Turkey legs! The rest of us had chili dogs and bottled root beer – and sugar cookies. 🙂

    Valas tp 25

It was a pleasant time, as it always is at the pumpkin patch. We left with a huge bag of kettle corn to share on the ride home (I'm still finding popcorn kernels on the floor of my car), and we're already excited to go back again. (Okay, I can't really speak for Breanna, who is probably in her dorm, furiously practicing her duck-racing skills rather than studying for exams.)

Before I go, I'd like to share one last disturbing photo with you. It's of Sabrina, on top of some sort of dirt pile, pretending she had just climbed a huge mountain. However, Sabrina is not the disturbing part of the photo. Can you guess what is?

    Valas tp 18

It's been almost a week since we went to Vala's, and I imagine Mike has no idea we even left.

    Exhilarating

Mike and I cannot express our thanks enough to those of you who supported and encouraged Mike through your comments, emails, and giving. We were overwhelmed by the generosity shown, and thanks to you all, Mike exceeded his financial goal he set for his team – and he completed his very first 10K race! (I think I mentioned before that Mike has never been, nor has he ever wished to be, a runner. However, since he began training just a few short weeks ago, he found that he actually started to like running, and has now set his sights on a half-marathon.)

We arrived downtown early for the check-in, and then it was time to head out into the streets. The day was a drizzly, chilly 53 degrees, but according to the seasoned runners in the group, this made for an excellent day.

Looking past the 2-mile start point, I was shocked at how many people were up ahead!

    "You are un-American," I replied.

It was just over an hour later that we spotted Mike coming around the bend, headed toward the finish and probably wondering if we were going to be there…

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who donated to the American Lung Association. It was very nice and thoughtful of each one of you who took the time to donate to such a worthy cause.   Like most of you, I really enjoy reading my wife's blog.  I always read the comments left by readers and am amazed at how kind and nice everyone is that leaves a comment.  I also wanted to take a moment and thank everyone that left condolences and thoughtful messages when my parents passed away.  All of those were very helpful to me.  Thanks to all of you for being so thoughtful.

    Work it, Girl

A few days ago, Sophie and I walked Mike out to his car before he left for work for the evening. I noticed that the sun was shining beautifully on Sophie's hair, and I asked her if she minded if I took her picture. She agreed, and then I asked her if she wanted me to take lots of pictures of her. "You mean, like you do the girls when they're posing?" she asked. "Sure!" I replied. At this, she was happy, so off we went to a nearby park owned by a local nursery.

We had a fun time, although there were a few too many frogs in the pond for her liking. And she kept making me walk in front of her, so I could clear out any grasshoppers before she passed by.

Here are just a few of the pictures I took that day. I love you, Sophie!

    Funds for Lungs

Mike has been running every day, training his manly self to run in Omaha's 10K Corporate Cup on the 20th of this month. He is not a natural-born runner, nor has he ever aspired to be, but when a friend on the police department invited him to be on the team, he decided to give it a try. Then he asked me if I would post it to my blog, just in case there was anyone wanting to donate to the American Lung Association. His goal for his team is to raise $200.00, but he asked that I please stress that he doesn't want anyone to feel any obligation!

Just in case you feel moved to give, however, here is Mike's page… and here is what he had to say:

I have signed up as a participant in the American Lung Association's Corporate
Cup, scheduled for September 20th, 2009 at Civic Auditorium (17th and Capitol).
I have set a personal fundraising goal of $200.00 to help the Lung Association
in its fight to for cures, clean air and smoke-free kids, and I would appreciate
your support in helping me reach this goal.

    Please visit my personal web
page and follow the instructions to make a secure online donation. I would
appreciate any contribution you decide to make.
    Thanks in advance for
    your support.

Btw, I've been teasing him about this picture, bc it was taken when he was driving me around downtown, showing me various places I could perhaps take Sabrina's senior photos. So I told him to pose for me and I'd do a senior citizen shoot for him. 🙂

Good luck with your run, you studly husband, you! Look at the bright side: if you can't make it to the first mile mark, you can always join the kids for the 100-yard dash event.

    Hodgepodge

As most of you know by now (bc of my gushing on Twitter and Facebook), Breanna has started her own cross-stitch designing business under the name Hodgepodge Cottage. The name she finally settled on couldn't be more perfect! (She started out with Frilly Lilly, but found that the domain name had already been claimed by someone… then she jokingly called herself Blueberry Lane Samplers as a mock of Plum Street Samplers… but considering the wide variety of her interests in life, I think "hodgepodge" describes her perfectly.)

Breanna has always been a creative soul, finding great satisfaction in writing, drawing, music, and fabric. Last summer she discovered sewing, and spent a lot of time with my mom, who taught her how to quilt. A few years before, when she was in high school and was grounded from her social life (ha! I miss those days…), she was so bored, she decided to learn how to cross stitch. And now here we are! 🙂

She will be debuting her first design at the St. Charles Needlework Market on September 24th, and I couldn't be happier for her! Here are some close-ups of the three flags she designed…

This one was stitched by her Meems (my mom)…

    Hf tp 2

The flag "pole" is actually a wooden skewer used for grilling, painted black. We then used tapestry nails to anchor down the pole, with a small amount of tacky glue applied underneath.

    Hf tp 7

Here, you can see the underside of the flag pole…

    Hf tp 5

Since double-sided tape is my very best friend when it comes to finishing (please don't tell anyone that or I'll just deny it), that's what was used to apply the ric-rac. And then a few more tapestry nails were used to embellish the remaining sides.

    Hf tp 3

Here is the one that Breanna stitched…

    Hf tp 10

I can't believe she stitched it all by herself! :)  And the cheery purple trim and bright backing fabric are so…hodgepodge! I love all the happy colors she chose.

    Hf tp 9

Finally, here is the one that I stitched for her…

    Hf tp 4

And if the front is too "dark" for you… check out the underside!

    Hf tp 8

If I remember correctly, I believe that fabric came from Kwilty Kim. 🙂

If you happen to be going to Market, you can check out Bre's models in the Kelmscott Designs suite. Each of the models are stitched on 32 ct. Vintage Pearled Barley (Lakeside Linens) and they use Crescent Colours cotton floss in Blackbird, Plymouth Rock, Antique Lace, Tangerine, Bamboo, Eve's Leaves, and Mulled Berries.

Congratulations, Bre! I love you soooooooooooooooo much!

    Viola’s Quilts

The last time we were in Kansas, we spent the entire week trying to clean out Mike's parents' things, and ended up having a 4-day garage sale for the sheer volume of items that we had no room for in our house. Sophie manned the checkout line, I tried to keep tables and signs organized, and Mike brought out box after box after box after boxboxbox of things, finding storage areas in his parents' home that none of us knew existed.

Every so often I'd look around the garage to see what new items he had brought out.  And that's when I spotted it: a bulging vinyl bag, stashed in with all of the other clothing and candle holders and dog toys. I pulled out the bag and unzipped it, revealing  – not one – but THREE very old hand-pieced quilts.

I sputtered and twitched and tried to keep my composure, quite shocked at what I'd found. And even more shocked that Mike had chosen to add that dusty old vinyl bag to the sale without looking inside of it first. When I told my friend Kim about it, she said, "And that's how old quilts end up in garage sales: MEN!"

All three quilts appeared to have some sort of water damage on them, outside of the regular wear and tear. They were all made by Jimmy's (my father in-law) grandmother, who helped raise him after his mother died when Jimmy was three years old.

Here is a photograph of Jimmy's grandparents, Homer and Viola…

    Stewart tp 2

And here is Jimmy as a baby…

    Stewart tp 3

This next photo makes me smile bc Jimmy's father, James Leonard, is hiding behind his son, trying to make it look like Jimmy was in the chair all by himself. (It makes me smile bc I used to do this with my girls when they were babies.)

    Stewart tp 4

The three quilts were actually given to Jimmy by his Grandma Viola, Mike explained to me. This one was my very favorite, bc of the happy colors and pattern…

I'm so happy these were found before they were sold! (I declined to photograph the other two bc of the obvious water damage and tearing.)

    Beam Me Up. Now.

Mike and Sophie LOVE building Lego sets. It's one of their favorite pastimes. Usually they end up getting somewhat persnickety with each other, given all the tiny details that need to be tended to…

Mike: "Where's the little one-piece thing that goes in this spot?"

Soph: "WHAT one-piece thing? The directions say you need the half-piece thing."

Mike: "What are you talking about? There's no half-piece thing, Soph!"

Soph: "RIGHT HERE, DAD. IT SAYS IT RIGHT HERE."

Mike: "That says HAIR-piece, Soph. The little dude needs a HAIR-piece."

    Soph: "Yeah, so do you."

Mike: "You'd better check yourself. Now where's the half-piece thing that goes in this spot?"

This time, however, they got along quite well. Most likely it's because the Lego set they were playing had to do with a cool alien creature and a spaceships, and if there's anything Mike loves, it's alien creatures and spaceships.

    And their sound effects…

    Lego tp 9

    …"rrrrfffvvvvvvvvtttttttzzzzzzzzvvvvvvffffffpffffffpffffffttttbbbbbrrrrrrr."

    Soph: "Dad."

    Mike: "rrrvvv…."

    Soph: "DAD."

Mike: "bvvvvvv… oh no, we're losing power! Bvvvvvvvvvvvvv…."

Soph: "Okay, that's enough, Dad. You're not taking this seriously, dude."

Sophie soon realized that there was nothing in the galaxy that could stop her alien spaceship-driving father, so she decided to join him in an alien battle.

    Details

Yesterday I went to a lake near my house, looking for a good spot to take Sabrina's portraits. I wanted to find some really beautiful light, so I set out just after I dropped Soph off at school and the sun had been awake for a couple of hours. I got out of my car, headed through some very tall weeds and started looking around. I know I've posted about this before, but it truly amazes me when I see all the beautiful details in heavy wildflowers and weeds.

The morning dew was  sparkling all around me. I had my little purse camera with me,  and I ended up not finding any great portrait sites, but rather some often overlooked (and trampled on) works of the Creator Himself. 🙂

These aren't going to be any gallery-worthy photos (I mean, I did mention the Creator Himself, so I wish they could be!), but they are a little reminder to me of a morning well-spent.

I don't know what it is about this odd tree that captured me… there were hundreds of these dried-up "blossoms" hanging down like grape clusters, and they were so beautiful! They reminded me of antique linen…

While these weeds are often scoffed at, if you ever get the chance to look at one with dew on it, look as closely as you can… all those tiny beads of water look like twinkling Christmas lights… oh how I wish I'd had my macro lens with me!
