    California, Day 2

Today is moving day for Bre, so I thought I'd get to my computer a bit early and post about our 2nd day in San Diego… Sea World! The last time we were at Sea World, it was in Texas, before Sophie was born. Sabrina was still in her stroller, and Bre got to pet dolphins.. but this time, 16 years later and in California, the park was much larger, with more rides and shows – and no Annheuser-Busch Clydesdale horses. :(  (If they were there, we didn't see them.)

Of course, the star of the park was there (no, not you, Mike)…

    Tp 18

    Tp 19

    Tp 20

(This is the picture Sophie got…)

    Tp 21

After Shamu's show, we went to a Cirque du Soleil performance on the other side of the park. If you're not familiar with Cirque shows, they're a twist on a usual circus, taking acrobatics and strange creatures to a new level. They have several different themes to their shows now (my favorite show is Ka, performed in Las Vegas), and will usually prep the crowd by doing a mini pre-show with odd characters. This day was no exception, and when two "clowns" came out, everyone was fascinated. They started moving through the crowd, teasing people and speaking in a strange language in gravelly voices. One of them started making their way toward our side of the arena, and when he laid eyes on Mike, he froze. Suddenly he pointed at Mike, and in a booming voice, yelled, "PAPAaaaa!!!!"

    Oh no.

    Say it isn't so.

He's going to make Mike the star of the park.

    Tp 21

He pulled Mike from his seat and dragged him to the front of our section. He then started rolling up Mike's shirt sleeves, all the while speaking in his strange growly gibberish…

    Tp 22

    Tp 23

    Tp 24

After he got his sleeves rolled up, he then coaxed Mike into mimicking him in various muscle-man moves. Mike obliged, but at the risk of actually embarrassing Mike (is that even possible?), I'll refrain from showing the photos. Trust me, though… it was as if we were watching Hulk Hogan in a WWF warm-up.

After the man-roars ceased, the clown shook Mike's hand, and Mike was ready to breathe a sigh of relief that it was all over…

    Tp 25

However, if you'll notice the clown's left hand, you'll see that he wasn't quite ready to let Mike sit down…

    Tp 26

Off he dragged poor Mike, to the middle of the arena. Once there, he started showing Mike some crazy karate-like moves, and had him repeat them…

    Tp 27

Meanwhile, on the other side of the arena, the second clown was harrassing another audience member, and eventually he was dragged to the front as well. He's the guy in the orange shirt, behind Mike…

    Tp 29

They were each coached in these odd fighting moves, and had to perform them for the audience. (Btw, the girls were mortified, and I believe I overheard Breanna say, "My life is ruined.") After learning their moves, they were told to face each other and duke it out in slow-motion with the techniques they'd just learned…

    Tp 30

It was quite hilarious when they were told to face each other, bc Mike was so burly compared to the kid standing in front of him. I felt like a Philistine watching the battle of David and Goliath.

    Tp 28b

In the end, the audience was satisfied that they were both declared winners…

    Tp 31

…and Mike was finally allowed to return to his seat, where he was greeted him with cheers and high-fives from the audience members on our side… (Btw, they kept the orange-shirted kid up there and made him squeeze into a large plastic floating ball.)

    Tp 32

You were a good sport, sweety. 😉

After our Sea World adventures, we headed back out to the parking lot to hunt for our car, and we spotted this crazy van covered in stickers. The driver was a mom, talking on the phone to someone – most likely whoever she was supposed to be picking up at the park. The girls decided they wanted to have their picture taken in front of it, so they all ran over to it before the lady could drive away. I was horrified, bc obviously this woman's van was not part of the day's attractions, but I quickly snapped their photo before the lady could get out of her car and tell them to get the blankety-blank away from her vehicle. It's a blurry shot bc I didn't have time to change my camera settings, but you get the idea…

    Tp 34

I gave them the thumbs-up sign (which is what I always do to let them know I took the photo; this saves them from continuing to stand there smiling), and they scurried off, giggling as if they'd pulled some sneaky prank.

After we located our car, it was off to dinner at this popular joint:

    Tp 35

…and then back to the hotel. Mike and Soph decided to go for a late-night swim, and I followed along with my camera…

    Tp 36

On the way back to the room, I took a photo of the marina, but it doesn't do it justice. It's such a quiet place at night, compared to the hustle of it all in the sunlight…

    Tp 37

Day 2 was lots of fun. And Mike, your performance at Cirque du Soleil was your 15 minutes of fame, then I'm sorry. I know you were hoping for more of a Bruce-Lee-type experience.

    California!

Greetings from my computer desk! We're back from our exciting – and exhausting – family vacation to California, and I'm finally able to sit down and get caught up a little.

We took off last Monday morning for San Diego, and here's a little of how our first day went…

    Tp 1

We arrived in San Diego at 8:45 a.m., which meant that the hotel wasn't quite ready for the Stewart Clan to take over. So Mike drove us to the San Diego Zoo instead…

It didn't take Mike long to find a tree to hide behind and pretend he was a wild animal. I have no idea what possesses him to do this whenever he sees shrubbery, but he gets a kick out of it, and the girls join him to make him feel better about himself.

    Tp 3

Bre, however, refuses to join in Mike's animal antics. Instead, she says things like, "Look! I'm Dad, and you can't see me because I'm next to a tree! Rawr!"

    Tp 4

Lord, please help me. Please. I'll never ask for anything again. (And is it just me, or does one really need to hold their arms out for balance when the balance beam is that much larger than one's shoe?)

    Tp 5

I smiled happily as my legs were being crushed…

    Tp 6

The zoo was beautiful, but very hot. (California weather is so odd… if you stand in one place, you're sweating to death. But if you move 10 feet to the left, you need a jacket.) We all love our Henry Doorly Zoo, but it was fun seeing a new place. And the panda was so sweet!

    Tp 6a

    Tp 2

After the zoo, we headed to the Best Western Island Palms Hotel, and after dropping our suitcases off in our room we went to the hotel's restaurant for dinner. I've never been a fan of hotel dining, but this restaurant was fantastic, and the weather for eating outside was wonderful…

    Tp 7

After dinner, Mike and Sabrina and Sophie changed clothes and headed to the beach, while Bre and I stayed behind…

    Tp 8

    Tp 9

While they were gone, I brewed some coffee and stitched a bit while Bre took off for a 4-mile run around the marina. When she got back, we headed out with our cameras to take some photos before the sun went down.

See those tiny spikey things on the top of the sign? We saw those all over rooftops and signs in the area, so I presumed it was to keep the sea gulls from loitering where they shouldn't be…

    Tp 11

This was the marina, right outside our window…

    Tp 12

    Tp 13

    Tp 15

I loved the branches on this tree…

    Tp 14

    Tp 16

The next photo was taken from our balcony. It was taken later in the week, bright and early, but since I was showing you what was around our hotel, I thought I'd include it here… I'm absolutely amazed at these Navy ships. My grandfather worked on an aircraft carrier during WWII, so I think they're magnificent…

    Tp 17

That's it for Day One! It was a fantastic start to our family vacation. I'll be back tomorrow with more. In the meantime, I've got more unpacking to do of my suitcase – and re-packing to do with Bre, since she moves into her new apartment tomorrow!

    Tp 10

    I've missed you all! 🙂

It's time to announce the winners! The first winner will receive 3 currently-released Plum Street Samplers patterns as well as 1 e-voucher for a future release, good through December 31, 2011. The second winner will receive 1 current release and an e-voucher for a future release.. and Winner #3 will receive her choice of a current release OR an e-voucher for a future release. (That last one was Sabrina's idea.)

The winners will be "announced" by Breanna's newly-adopted kitten, Tilly! :)

    Congratulations, Winner #1!

    Tp 2

    And here is Winner #2!

    Tp 3

    And finally, Winner #3!

    Tp 1

Congratulations to each of you, and thank you to EVERYONE who wrote in. I wish I could send every single one of you something! If the 3 winners will email me at paulette71@yahoo.com, I'll get your patterns out as soon as possible. You can either have them emailed to you as a .pdf or I can snail-mail them to you. Whichever you prefer! Just FYI: I'll be heading out of town on Monday (July 25) and won't return until August 2nd, so if you email me during that time period, I won't be able to send your charts until I get back home.

    Before I leave…

Bre and one of her roommates went to the humane society yesterday and brought home sister kittens.. they'll be living with the girls in their apartment in a couple of weeks, but in the mean time, Tilly will have to keep her sweet self in Bre's room bc of my cat allergy and the 3 crazy pooches that live downstairs – who at the moment have no idea she exists; the Yorkie, however, knows something is up…

    Tp

Tilly is such a sweetheart! I made the mistake of laying on the floor to watch her yesterday, and she immediately approached me and rubbed her little face right on my left eye. For those of you who are allergic to cats, you know what this means. :(  Needless to say, I exited the room about 5 minutes later and had to wash my face and hands! I LOVE cats, so I'm very sad for these blasted allergies (that didn't show up until after Bre was born, for some reason)!

She was just spayed a couple of days ago, so her little belly is shaved…

    Blog Fodder

When I first started blogging back in 2004, I had intended to write just about my stitching endeavors – sort of a way to keep myself motivated by posting my plans and progress reports. Then I started designing, and it went from my "Cranberry Crossing" blog (the name coming from the primitive/folk art craft business I had for a few years back in the '90's) to my Plum Street Samplers blog, where – again – I had intended to write strictly about my stitching, whether it be my own designs or others I was working on.

    Tp

Soon, however, I became bored with my slow progress reports, and decided to branch out and start sharing a little bit about my family, although I was afraid it might annoy some people. Seven years later, I'm amazed at how many people have written to me to ask about my family… you show your concern when I express mine, and you share in my joy as well. You have no idea how much that means to me! I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who are annoyed, as I'd feared, but that's what makes us all different; it's nice that everyone is not the same, or there really wouldn't be anything at all to blog about, no matter who you were.

So now I have a stitching/designing/dogs/family/cooking/photography/andsometimesTraderJoe's blog. And I'd like to thank you for allowing me to share it all with you.

Today is my blog's anniversary, so if you're still reading, I'd love to have a giveaway to celebrate! Just leave a comment (and if you don't like comments, your name will do – or you can email me) in the comments box of this post for a chance to receive 3 currently-released Plum Street Samplers charts of your choice*, as well as an e-voucher for any one future Plum Street Samplers release through December 31, 2011.  The winner will be announced this Friday, July 22nd.

*This is the fine print: I'm sorry, but I cannot give away any current or upcoming Just Cross Stitch magazines, nor can I give away anything that is or will be released as a retreat or shop exclusive.

Thank you so much for always taking the time to stop in and see what we're up to. I feel like I've gotten to know many of you, whether it be through your own blogs or emails, and I'm thankful for this new, "modern" way of making friends!

    See you soon!

    Toffee Josh

Like many kids, Sabrina spent her childhood trying out different sports and musical instruments, seeking that certain something that she could excel at and call her own.

I think, after all these years, my girl has finally found her calling.

Earlier in the year, she decided to teach herself to play the guitar, which is something she's always wanted to do. Breanna had gotten a guitar for Christmas several years ago, but had never taken to it. So Sabrina picked it up, logged onto YouTube, and got to work.

Soon she reached a point where she couldn't progress any further without a real teacher's help, so we headed to Guitar Center. She had been in a few times before, and knew right where to go – which was straight to the climate-controlled guitar room to speak with Josh, the manager. He answered all of her questions, no matter how foolish they seemed, and before the day was over she had signed up for 4 lessons and came back the next day to purchase her very first classical guitar. As a matter of fact, she's even named it. Toffee, bc of the color, and Josh, bc he is one of the nicest people we've ever met. Truly!

She had her first lesson today, which was absolutely thrilling for her. And from the sound of things, I think I'm going to love Toffee Josh as much as she does. 🙂

    The 4th

I hope you all had as much fun as we did, celebrating Independence Day this year! We got together at my parents' house for a barbeque and lots of other fixins (sans the potato salad), and then headed out front to the driveway to watch the fireworks.

Mom and I had a few different salsas this year, but we both agreed that the Trader Joe's corn salsa was the best…

    Tp 1

Major was in the house – against his wishes – to save his sanity from the noise of the firecrackers, so Sabrina kept him company for a bit…

    Tp 2

But not even a sweet, nervous puppy could keep Bean from racing her little sister to catch the parachuters that fell from the sky…

Btw, I can't believe I didn't get any pictures of my dad, bc he was the Head Pyro Guy that night.. we won't mention to my mother how he almost set an entire load of mulch on fire. Or when something in the street was on fire, and he casually walked over and patiently poked it with a large stick until the flames died down. (He used to be a firefighter, so I suppose flaming mulch or unidentified burning objects don't bother him much.)

Anyway, I hope you all had a fantastic July 4th celebration!  Cody, if you're reading this, thank you for stopping by to visit the fam! :)  And Bre, if you're reading this, hurry up and come back home bc we miss you!

    Dads and Daughters

In about an hour we'll be heading to my parents' house to celebrate Independence Day, but before we leave I thought I'd share some photos from last night. Mike, Sophie, and my dad and I went to a Stormchasers game at the new Werner Park, where we watched a brilliant fireworks show afterward.

    Game tp 1

And now it's time for a little game called "Who is happier to be with their dad?"… Good luck in your guesses!

Later that night the cameraman came by, and guess who got to be on the Flex-Cam?

That's my camera on the left, Mike looking at the big screen on the right and wondering how he got to be so handsome, and Joonbug in the middle, flexing her muscles for everyone in the stadium.

After the game we headed down onto the field to watch the fireworks show…

    Happy Independence Day!

P.S. I was supposed to bring Puny's Potato Salad to my parents' house for the cookout tonight, but I left the potatoes to cook too long, and now we're having mashed potatoes. I went ahead and added the bacon drippings though (and a dash of garlic), and they're delicious! But if any of you out there are making Puny's Potato Salad tonight, please eat an extra helping for me. And Mom, who will never let me live this down.

The College World Series (and other shenanigans)

I don't know much about baseball teams. I know how to play baseball (one of my favorite things to do is play catch with a glove on), and I swoon over like how baseball uniforms look, but as far as following who is playing, who is winning, or who is using HGH, I'm pretty much clueless. Despite that, I do enjoy attending one game during the CWS. It doesn't have to be any game in particular, but I do like to go for the excitement of it all.

This year was the first year it wasn't at Rosenblatt Stadium, which was bittersweet for people in general. I loved the nostalgia of Rosenblatt.. it was fun looking around at all the young fans, wearing their favorite teams' jerseys and ballcaps, probably dreaming of some day playing there. The new stadium – TD Ameritrade Park – is an impressive, state-of-the-art arena. But the smalltown feel is gone.

So it's out with the old, and in with the bold!

    Tp 2

This is one of Mike's good friends and partner-in-reducing-crime, J-Mart…

    Tp 3

And he's the one who took this picture:

    Tp 1

These are a few of the merchandise stands, just across the street from the stadium…

    Tp 4

    Tp 5

    Hi, Joonie!

    Tp 6

Mike and Bre are huge Texas fans, so it was a sad day when the Longhorns were eliminated. Here they are, paying their respects under the burnt orange banner…

    Tp 7

This is the first thing I saw upon entering the stadium:

    Tp 8

What I loved about TD Ameritrade is that no matter where you stood, you got a fantastic view of the field… (this was just to the right of that Gluten-Free stand)

    Tp 9

    Go, orange dudes!

    Tp 10

    Go, guys in yellow!

    Tp 11

Breanna is usually embarrassed by my sports ignorance. But since she worries that I really will yell, "GO ORANGE DUDES!" she chooses not to make fun of me. Wise girl.

    Tp 12

Sophie's just here for the Dippin' Dots.

    Tp 13

    Tp 14

After the game, it was time for the usual Stewart tradition of Mike spending way too much money on souvenirs for the girls.

I have no idea who won the game, btw.

    Tp 15

Sabrina wasn't feeling very well, so she didn't come to the game with us… we missed you, Bean!

    Tp 16

On our way back to the parking garage, we passed the Qwest Center, where we stopped to look at all of the unusual art in front of the Qwest's entrance…

    Tp 21

    Tp 17

    Yes, Mike, I see you…

    Tp 22

    Tp 19

    Tp 23

(Is it just me, or is someone really yelling, "Over here! Look at me!")

    Tp 18

    Tp 20

Okay, we should probably go before this gets ugly…

    Tp 24

It must be a boy thing. Check out the kids to the right.

I miss Rosenblatt, where the seats are painted blue, the tail-gaters are the friendliest you'll find, and the sculptures are too high to reach.

    House-Sitting

One of the many reasons my girls love to visit my parents' house is bc they have the most beautiful yard, full of happy gardens, well-fed birds, and one joyous Golden Retriever.

I had the pleasure of house-sitting for my parents recently, and one of my duties included keeping my mother's flowers watered. (Usually she also writes "deadhead all 4 million petunias DAILY!" on my list of chores, but she forgot to write it this time, which made me feel like I'd won the lottery.)

On one early evening last week, I decided to take a stroll through the yard, and I brought my camera along. The sun was getting ready to go down, and there was a slight breeze that caused the windchime that hangs just outside the door to sway…

    Tp 1

I walked down the steps of the deck into the most beautiful, sunny yard…

    Dandelions

I have no idea what variety of yellow flowers these are, but they were everywhere! No wonder the kids love to frolic when they're here!

    DANDELIONS-IN-FIELD

Oh, wait a second. I was pulling pictures from my back yard. Oopsies! hehehe?

Here are some from her yard, starting with a windowbox just behind the windchime…

    Tp 2

    Tp 3

It's fun to look around and spot something unusual…

    Tp 6

Some of you have probably met Major, Friday's brother; he's such a sweet boy, full of sunshine and oh-so-high on life…

    Tp 4

I love these, even though they're spent. Something about their delicate look is just so charming to me…

    Tp 7

    Tp 8

    An urn, way out back…

    Tp 9

    Tp 11

This little caterpillar has hung here so long, the bark of the tree grew around its hanger…

    Tp 19

    Tp 10

Like I said, one never knows what unusual things one will spot…

    Tp 12

    Was that your doing?

    Tp 5

    Tp 14

This is another spent flower that looks beautiful to me… They were once daisies, but now they look like little pincushions on a stem…

    Tp 13

    Tp 15

    My favorite flowers…

    Tp 16

    Tp 20

    Tp 21

    Tp 17

The only bad thing about getting down on the ground to take these pictures is it gets the attention of Major. If I'm not on my guard, I'll get this boy coming at me like a freight train and I'll end up in a full body cast…

    Tp 18

So far, I've made it up off the ground before he reaches me.

Here's a garden pick that is stuck in some rocks that surround a little fountain…

    Tp 23

Oh great. There is literally no hiding from this boy.

    Tp 24

    Getupgetupgetupgetupget UP!!

    Tp 25

I breathe a sigh of relief that he was just overjoyed about getting a drink…

    Tp 22

The sun was getting lower, and I decided it was time to go back to my yellow gardens at home. It truly was enjoyable walking through my parents' yard – especially since there was no deadheading to do. 😉

But the next time I have to house-sit, I should probably wear a suit of armor… just in case.

    Tp 26

*Edited to add: After Joann's comment, I must tell you that I truly don't have dandelions in my yard – I was just kidding bc I knew Mom would insist they were mine! But they're not either of ours. (Hi, Joann!) 🙂 The first dandelion photo came from here, and the second one came from here.
