    Harry and Stuff

Today we went to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. (I used to have a crush on Ralph Fiennes until he became He-Whose-Name-Shall-Not-Be-Spoken, btw. Now he just gives me the shivers.)

Sabrina works at the movie theater, and when Harry Potter first opened, the employees were "assigned" to different Hogwart's houses, and Sabrina was given Hufflepuff. I wasn't home to take her picture before she left for work, so I begged her to take one for me. Here she is in her self-portrait, and I think she looked quite lovely in her school uniform!

    AMC

Other than the first movie of the HP series, this one was my very favorite, and I can't wait for part 2!

Recently Mike and Sophie started building a Legos kit for Hagrid's Hut… Mike took these pictures, along with about 337 others…

It's amazing what Legos comes up with. I bought a Christmas advent calendar for Mike and Sophie to start on December 1st, and I'm as excited as they are to see what's behind each little door. Here they are after putting together a little snowman last week…

    Legos tp

They kind of remind me of the Malfoys when they get together.

    Again, with the shivers.

    Off With Their Heads

Sophie has had quite a head cold these past few days, but that didn't stop her from performing her royal duties and donning her Red Queen (from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland) costume to go trick-or-treating last night with her dad. If there's anything these two love, it's getting into their characters.

They came back with loads of hydrogenated kernel oils, soy lecithin, and artificial flavors, all in brightly colored wrappers. (I remember when I was a kid, and they used this stuff called natural sugar that was really bad for you.)

I hope you had a wonderful Halloween night! Mine was fine until I suddenly realized one very frightening, heart-stopping, blood-curdling fact:

There is, indeed, a bored game for every occasion.

    Retired.

… From painting shoes! I've painted my last pair (which makes a whopping total of 2 pairs), and I'm officially retiring from it now. 🙂 When Bre saw Bean's shoes last week, she decided to present me with her own blank footware – complete with an enormous, cheesy grin on her face.

After stammering a bit, I agreed to paint them. Here they are after being given the Sharpie-treatment.. Breanna's ink bled just a bit more than Sabrina's did, probably bc of the larger canvas weave (for lack of a better thing to call it). So if you decide to paint your own, be sure to get a finer "weave" when it comes to the canvas.

    Bre shoes tp 5

I used just a few sizes of flat and round brushes (between the two sets, I spent around $8) and the cheapest acrylic paints I could find. The point is not to try to get it perfect, but just to "scribble in" the paint, giving it more of a cartoon feel. If you do go outside the lines, simply wait for the paint to dry and re-draw the line with your Sharpie pen.

    Bre shoes tp 4

I didn't use any sort of fabric medium (which is designed to make the paint go on more smoothly when working with clothing) bc I didn't need it to. I was working in tiny spaces, and I mostly just stippled the paint onto the shoes, rather than brushing it on.

    Bre shoes tp 3

This is as fun – or stressful – of a project as you want it to be! If you decide that you're going to have fun with it, then you'll most likely love your shoes in the end. But if you worry about how they're going to look bc you messed up here or there, it defeats the purpose of having a pair of shoes that no one else has. 😉

    Bre shoes tp 2

You don't need a whole arsenal of paints, either. I bought 5 small bottles and when I needed a color, I went to mixing!  For example, the light green squares on the top of the right shoe were made by combining a little turquoise and a little yellow.

    Bre shoes tp 1

    And there you have it!

It really is a fun project to do, but the reason I'm going into retirement from it is bc I have way too many hobbies already. And besides, I can't paint with one hand and drink coffee with the other.

    Or can I?

    Bean’s Birthday

Bean turned 17 on Tuesday, and after school she got to open her presents and have her boo stop by. (For those of you who aren't current on teeny-bopper lingo, "boo" means "beau." So now, when you're listening to the top 40 on the radio, you'll feel really dope when you know what boo means.)

    Here's what Boo brought Bean:

    Bday tp 2

    Bday tp 1

There were TWO DOZEN of these beauties! I was floored!

Her dad got her a brand new cell phone that does everything from her schoolwork (so she doesn't have to) to remotely switching President Obama's radio station (so he doesn't accidentally say things like "boo"). He also got her some other really cool things (and he even let me say they were from me, too, bc all I did was give birth to her, which is lame) like an Urban Outfitters gift card and some makeup from Sephora…

    Bday tp 5

There he is, holding the lip gloss he picked out all by himself (after calling me about what colors of "eye junk and stuff" to get), as well as a foundation brush that he said "was the brush to beat all brushes." He was very proud of himself for walking into Sephora, knowing what to ask for. What he doesn't realize is that sometimes people wonder about burly men who walk into Sophora, knowing what to ask for.

Nate was watching the gift-unwrapping from afar, so Friday kept him company…

    Bday tp 7

Here is Bean, reading her annual letter from her Dad…

    Bday tp 8

Sophie got her some Bath and Body Works products (her favorite thing to give to people!) and created a birthday masterpiece with her Mr. Sketch markers…

    Bday tp 6

Even though Nate was getting ready to take Bean out to dinner and to a movie, we decided to spoil their appetites with cake and ice cream first…

    Bday tp 4

And then, before they left, Nate played his guitar and sang beautifully to her  – and to Sophie, who loves to hear him sing and play as much as I do. (I think, however, that Sophie is secretly studying his talents to see if he will be worthy of singing backup for her one day.)

    Bday tp 3

After their date, Bean's friends had a surprise birthday party for her at the home of one of her best friends, where she was crowned with a tiara and given lots of fun gifts. She had absolutely no idea this was coming, since the plan was to "hang out" as usual. 🙂

I'm so happy my Bean had a fun day… although I do still owe her a birthday frappuccino, as I'd promised. And I'm very thankful that she has such good friends who made her day special.

And thank you to all of you! It was so sweet of you to leave her best birthday wishes on Tuesday, and she got a kick out of reading them. 🙂

    Seventeen.

My sweet Bean's birthday is today. This baby girl  – straight from the Lord's Hand – has grown from a precious, thumb-sucking sprout into the perfect blessing of a kindhearted young woman. I'm so proud that she's not only my daughter, but my friend.

I love you, Bean. Happy Birthday.

    Purrfect Fit

Many many many days (weeks?) ago, my Sabrina bought a pair of plain white canvas zip shoes that she begged me to paint for her.

"What do you want painted on them?" I inquired.

"Oh, I don't care – just paint something!" she replied.

They sat on top of the dryer for ages, and every so often she'd say, "Mom, I thought you were going to paint my shoes? Pretty soon I won't be able to wear them…"

    Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Sweet-face guilt trip.

    Sabrina 113 edit tp

So today I picked them up and decided to paint them. I hauled all of the acrylic paints up from the  dungeon basement and found that most of them had dried. I also found that I hadn't properly cleaned my brushes the last time I used them, which rendered them useless. So off I went to Hobby Lobby and purchased new brushes and new acrylics. Then I grabbed my Sharpie and got to work…

    Crush.

Sabrina has a new love interest.

He's cute, charming, plays the guitar beautifully, and likes cars.

He also loves photography, and shoots a Canon 40D, so Sabrina is welcome to marry him if she likes.

They went on a pumpkin patch outing a few days ago (the day after our family went), and had their first kiss. A friend was there to document this momentous occasion, and I'd like to share it with all of you to see…

    Kiss

I sort of snagged that photo from Sabrina's Facebook album (with her permission to blog it, of course), and ran across another one, even more curious than the one above…

    Cow

Can someone please explain this to me? What are these children doing when we parents are not around to supervise?

Anyway, Sabrina has a new love interest.

And I think he's udderly adorable.

    Bumpkin Fun

When the girls were really little, one of my favorite things to do each fall was to take them to the pumpkin patch for hay-rack rides, pumpkin-picking, and sugar cookies. Many years later, that simple pumpkin patch has grown into an enormous country-folk attraction, offering everything from haunted houses to pony rides, with hot dogs and turkey legs (and sugar cookies) at every turn.

Last week was the opening week of Vala's Pumpkin Patch, and since the weather was perfect, we 5 Stewarts headed out.

After the race, we realize that Mike had disappeared… and soon found him several yards away, stuffing a hot dog into his face before any of us could as him to buy us one…

    Valas tp 13

Sabrina and Sophie decided to give the giant jumping pillow a try next…

    Valas tp 14

This one cracks me up, bc Sabrina looks like an underwater genie…

    Valas tp 15

Oh, the perils of long hair!

    Valas tp 16

    Valas tp 17

Again, we asked, "Where is Mike?"

"Where is our loving, strong father?"

"Where is that stud-muffin manly-man husband of mine?"

    Valas tp 20

I honestly believe he had no idea we had found him.

Sabrina and Sophie decided to join him, and I had to laugh at my Sabrina… she waffles bw being the fun-loving child that still wants to play on a jungle gym, yet when she realizes she'll be 17 soon, she decides that if she's going to play on a jungle-gym, she must look glamorous while doing so…

Mike, on the other hand, doesn't know that he passed 17 many years ago.

    Valas tp 21

    Valas tp 19

I noticed a man sitting on a bench nearby, singing to his baby. It was the most precious thing, watching him in his own world, completely charmed by the bundle in his arms. Although everything in me was telling me to hush, I decided to ask him if I could take his photo. He was a little startled, but he agreed when I told him that I just thought it was the sweetest thing in the world to see, and I wasn't a crazed stalker…

    Valas tp 22

Of course, maybe he wouldn't have been so startled if I hadn't looked like this:

    Valas tp 28

Of course I'm kidding. This was inside a little shop – with LOTS of orange lights! – and we were all having fun trying on masks and looking at the creepy souvenirs.  Although the background is the only thing in focus, I like it bc of the woman's expression behind us as Sabrina is sneaking up on me…

Sabrina's second attempt at terrorizing a family member (it's hard to see, but she's wearing an enormous gnarled hand)…

    Valas tp 26

Bre was happily trying on Halloween accessories behind Sophie…

Here is the photo that was intended for my October banner, but the light in the shop was too difficult to work with…

Turkey legs! The rest of us had chili dogs and bottled root beer – and sugar cookies. 🙂

    Valas tp 25

It was a pleasant time, as it always is at the pumpkin patch. We left with a huge bag of kettle corn to share on the ride home (I'm still finding popcorn kernels on the floor of my car), and we're already excited to go back again. (Okay, I can't really speak for Breanna, who is probably in her dorm, furiously practicing her duck-racing skills rather than studying for exams.)

Before I go, I'd like to share one last disturbing photo with you. It's of Sabrina, on top of some sort of dirt pile, pretending she had just climbed a huge mountain. However, Sabrina is not the disturbing part of the photo. Can you guess what is?

    Valas tp 18

It's been almost a week since we went to Vala's, and I imagine Mike has no idea we even left.

    Homecoming 2010!

The last Homecoming dress, the last Homecoming hairstyle, the last Homecoming jewelry.. all of it is behind me until my Sophie goes to her first Homecoming dance – in 2014. This past weekend was so much fun, and volunteering our home for a potluck dinner (instead of the kids in Sabrina's group all heading to different restaurants) made it even more memorable!

Before the potluck on Saturday evening, we all laughed (and fretted) that none of the kids would remember to bring any food, so I made sure to have enough pulled pork to feed 4 NFL teams and their families. I also had scotcharoos, tortilla rollups (which remained in the refrigerator, completely forgotten), my mom's famous punch, and all the soda-pop you could imagine.

However, not one child showed up on my doorstep without a food item. Therefore, I still have enough pulled pork to feed 4 NFL teams and their families. (But thanks to myself, there is no more of my mom's famous punch left.)

Here are some moments from Saturday night…(There are varied colors and textures in some of the photos bc they were immediately edited for Sabrina's Facebook page; since kids love all kinds of different looks to their pictures, that's what you see!)

    Hc tp 23

This is Collin, one of Sabrina's best friends. Her other bestie (Katie) was at a debate tournament this weekend, so instead of the three amigos attending together, it was just Collin and Bean…

    Hc tp 22

And guess what! Collin won Homecoming King! Congratulations, Collin!

    Hc tp 24

Right on time, the guests began to arrive…

    Hc tp 8

Aren't these girls just the cutest things? I wondered why they looked so tan in this photo, and then I realized it's because the sun was bouncing off of my yellow house onto their lovely faces!

    Hc tp 21

I love looking at how the girls choose to wear their hair. Sabrina's hairdresser chose to do a pin-up girl style on her, which I loved…

    Hc tp 2

What a great group of kids this was! Everyone was so polite and sweet, and nothing at all like the rambunctious freshmen they were just a few short years ago…

    Hc tp 20

Before she left, we grabbed a few pictures with Sabrina too…

    Hc tp 11

    Hc tp 12

(Okay, so maybe I should have gone to the hairdresser myself before the potluck… but that's what happens when you start the day's cooking before the sun comes up.)

    Hc tp 1

(Oh come on, I dont' look that bad.)

And so ends another paragraph in my middle daughter's senior year. No more Homecoming dresses, no more Homecoming hairstyles, no more Homecoming jewelry… but we'll always have the shoes.
