    Deutschland!

    I miss my Sabrina.

Remember back in March when Julia-from-Germany came to stay with us? Sabrina is participating in the German Exchange program, and they matched Julia with our family. What a lovely, sweet girl Julia was (is)!

She and Bean were great friends right from the start. (Thanks to modern technology, they had gotten to know each other over Skype visits and Facebook.) One of the cutest things about Julia was that when she found out Sabrina's nickname is "Bean," she always called her that – and in a very serious tone. (We all just sort of bark it out at her: "BEAN! HEY BEAN! GO CLEAN YOUR ROOM, BEAN!") Julia would say quietly, "Bean?" and then ask her a question. (I tried speaking quietly to Bean like that for a while, but she never seemed to hear me when it came to the cleaning her room part.)

Five days ago, it was Sabrina's turn to visit Julia's family. The exchange group (I believe there are about 20 of them, plus chaperones) arrived at the airport, and Sabrina and her best friend Katie were extremely excited.

Since Sabrina had packed so many gifts for her host family (including a 1-pound bag of Reese's Pieces for Julia, which she requested), she was 4 pounds over the weight limit for her suitcase. Since Katie was 2 pounds under the limit, they did what all besties do and switched over some things to Katie's suitcase. 🙂

Here's part of the group looking over their itineraries…

    Bye, Dad!

    Bye, Sophie!

Breanna was at home, but Sabrina said that when she crept into Brea's room early that morning to say goodbye, Brea grabbed her and hugged her warmly and told Sabrina she loved her. This almost caused us all to have to skip the airport and take Brea to the ER. After all, my girls are no different than any other quarreling, snippetting sisters on any given day.

The group was ready to leave, and Katie and Bean were the last ones to say goodbye. I lost count of how many hugs I got from my girl!

    And then she was off…

The last time she was at this airport, it was to pick up a new friend…

This time, it was to visit an "old" one…

We'll miss you so much, Sabrina! Come back to us with lots of souvenirs soon!

    So Thankful

I made a booboo on Breanna's goal! Her web page for Relay for Life (in the post from yesterday) said that she was supposed to reach $100, but her Team Captain told her that this year's goal for each team member is $350. I wasn't aware that was the case, and Breanna wasn't aware I posted it here! (She was very surprised and very grateful, btw, and eventually she'll figure out how to change that posted goal…)

Thank you SO MUCH to those of you who donated! Whether you've lost someone to cancer personally or just want to help the American Cancer Society, we sincerely thank you for your generosity.

    Relay for Life

Every year for the past 6 years Breanna has been participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event. This year she's planning on being on the Collegiate Crew (again!), which is a team organized by one of Breanna's very first playmates, Alex. (They've been friends for a really long time! Alex is the one in the olive green t-shirt, and Brea is the second person in from the right – the one holding her RFL shirt instead of wearing it, bc she had just gotten off of work…)

    Relay for life 09

I don't normally post things like this, but I thought I'd share with you Breanna's RFL webpage, just in case anyone has any interest in helping her achieve her goal of raising $100 for her team. (She has no idea I'm doing this, and Brea has always had an extremely hard time asking people for money – which is great from a parent's point of view, but not in the case of a fundraiser!)

I definitely understand that money can be tight these days, so please don't feel any obligation whatsoever. I'm just asking for donations to this cause if you feel you can help.

Btw, if you click on the link and are startled at Breanna's "new look," don't worry – that's not Brea. :) I believe it is another team member?

    Thank you so much.

    Memorial Day Cookout

My parents invited us over for one of their fabulous cookouts this evening, and as usual it was… well… fabulous. My dad smoked some ribs and chicken, and Mom clearly spent the entire day in the kitchen. Deviled eggs, potato salad, homemade bbq sauce, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, homemade ice cream, caramel nut bars, and who knows what else! All we provided was a cake and our appetites. (That's what my mom always says when I ask her if I can bring anything: "Just your appetites!" she says.)

Mike brought over a new lawn game… something about monkeys and balls. I never did figure it out.

    Mday tp 12

Maybe it was monkey bars and balls? Oh, I don't know. But Sophie and her friend Jenny had fun with it.

    Mday tp 10

    Here's Major Pain. He's Friday's brother, and such a sweetheart…

    Mday tp 3

Sabrina spent the better part of the night spoiling him…

    Mday tp 9

Sophie let me take her picture while Jenny was hiding for a game of Hide-and-Go-Seek (plus it gave her an excuse to open her eyes while she was counting)…

    Mday tp 6

Mom always has the best bowls and pitchers and fresh garden flowers!

    Mday tp 1

(I don't need pretty pitchers bc my kids just drink out of the kitchen faucet and Mike drinks straight from the milk jug, which annoys the frapp out of me, but he doesn't really mind.)

This is the only picture Mom would let me take of her; she's coming through the door from the deck with a plateful of ribs…

    Mday tp 2

The peonies from my parents' back yard are so beautiful…

    Mday tp 4

Here's Bean on the deck outside…I'm going to miss her so badly when she leaves for Germany in a couple of days…

    Mday tp 11

My mom bought these really cool food tents for outside. I'd never heard of them before, and I loved them!

    Mday tp 5

Mike thought they made great mosquito-net hats, which probably annoyed the frapp out of my mother.

    Mday tp 15

    Mday tp 14

There's not a whole lot that annoys my dad. He usually keeps his thoughts to himself.

    Mday tp 13

The weather was beautiful, Mike left the bored games at home, and the food was absolutely delicious. The whole evening was just…well, fabulous.

    Sweet Boy

    Hi, Friday-boy!

    Friday tp 2

Guess what! You get to go to the groomer today! Doesn't that sound like fun??

    Friday tp 3

What's wrong? Why won't you look at me? Is it something I said?

    Friday tp 1

Don't worry, boy. You'll smell dirty-doggish again in no time.

    I promise.

    Here's a sneak peek at Olga…

    Olga tp 2

She's an odd-looking feline (I've always liked odd), stitched with Crescent Colours and 36 ct. Vintage Tarnished Silver by Lakeside Linens. I'm not sure of the release date yet, as the chart hasn't even been written up, but I'm looking at very early June.

    I hope you like her!

    Double Digits

Today is Sophie's 10th birthday, and all she's talked about is how she's FINALLY in the "double digits." I'm so proud of my sweet girl, and for what a lovely young lady she is.

I have hundreds and hundreds of photos of my Sophie, but here are just a few of my favorites…

This was my favorite dress on her (she was at one of Sabrina's soccer games)…

This one cracks me up, bc the older girls and I were getting ready to head out to a cheerleading banquet, and we all bent over to have our picture taken with Sophie…but she bent over too!

If I've posted this once, I've posted it a thousand times, but I can't help it! It's my all-time very very very favorite picture. My brother loves his nieces, and they love him. 🙂

    Blooming

I've had fun peeking around and taking pictures of different flowers just opening up…

If you've visited my mom's blog lately, you've seen parts of her lovely garden, and I'm excited for everything to open up bc it's all so beautiful. It's always fun to see what new things she and my dad decide to plant and grow.

The photo of the bloom below is from my own back yard, but it was in mother's back yard at one time. Last year she decided to thin out some things, and I was happy to take her hand-me-downs. (Wouldn't that be a sweet name for a type of flower?)

    Geranium tp

These daisies were given to me by a neighbor about 15 years ago, who didn't want them in her garden any more…

This little fellow was visiting an opening bud… just after I took this photo, he ran underneath a petal.

    Aphid tp 1

I love these sturdy little plants…

    Salvia tp 1

    Salvia tp 2

Oh – and one more thing my mother passed on from her garden to mine…

    Dandelion tp 1

    (Teehee)

That's it for the flower photos, but before I go I'd like to show you Brea's new hair cut… it was a really tough decision to get a whopping 10 inches cut off, but I'm glad she went for it. 🙂 Don't worry, sweet girl. It will grow back.

Just like the dandelions in Meems' yard.
