    Framed!

I finally got around to taking some pictures of my Frances Eden, framed by Rensel Studios in Utah. I love the moulding Jill chose!

    FE tp 1

Because of the angle it's hanging, it appears crooked, but trust me – it's not!

    FE tp 2

Remember, this is the sampler passed on to me by Kim. She wasn't fond of the fabric (Glenshee) and fibers (DMC) she chose, and decided to one day start over.

    FE tp 3

    FE tp 4

    FE tp 5

I'm so happy with it! It's hanging over my bed next to Paradise Lost, as my goal is to fill my bedroom with Adam and Eve samplers.

Kim, I noticed your SDW sampler is progressing nicely. But if you ask me, it doesn't look like the type of fabric and fibers you would like, so…  just sayin'.  😉

    Little

Around the age of 10, Miss Sophie pleaded with me so often to let her wear mascara that I finally gave in. After all, it's tough living in a house with 3 other girls who love their makeup, and you're the only one who is unfortunate enough to only need 2 minutes to get ready to go anywhere.

Now that Sophie is getting ready for middle school, she's decided that mascara is just a bit too elementary for her, and has begun the arduous task of convincing me that she needs to have a bit of an older look about her before school begins. She believes that this would be accomplished with a little harmless eyeshadow – and perhaps a smidge of eyeliner – but nothing too crazy, of course. Despite the fact that images of Mimi from The Drew Carey Show keep appearing in my mind's eye, I have agreed that some very light eyeshadow would be acceptable, but I'm not ready for eyeliner on my little girl  middle-schooler yet.

Especially after seeing her recently with no makeup on at all. Oh my, how I love this child's face…

    Tp 1

She was sitting at the breakfast table with her older sisters, and they were all having a real conversation, with no arguing whatsoever…

    Tp 2

Pretty soon her sisters started telling her that she needed to smile with her eyes more open, so she gave it a try…

    Tp 3

"No, no, no!" they cried. "You must open your eyes and smile bigger!"

    So she tried again…

    Tp 4

(I do, in fact, have photos of their demonstrating how one must smile properly, but like their baby sister, they aren't wearing any makeup. And trust me when I say, if I want to keep peace with my older girls, I had better not post any of those photos.)

Sophie, your smile is perfectly perfect, and you were quite a good sport about it when they teased you. Which is a good thing, since you may be needing their advice on makeup soon.

    Tp 5

P.S. I doubt that you will, but if you ever get the notion to apply more makeup in the girls' restroom once you get to school than I allow you to leave the house wearing – and I find out about it?… I will suddenly show up at your school to have lunch with you, and I will be looking like Mimi from The Drew Carey Show.

    The 4th

I hope you all had as much fun as we did, celebrating Independence Day this year! We got together at my parents' house for a barbeque and lots of other fixins (sans the potato salad), and then headed out front to the driveway to watch the fireworks.

Mom and I had a few different salsas this year, but we both agreed that the Trader Joe's corn salsa was the best…

    Tp 1

Major was in the house – against his wishes – to save his sanity from the noise of the firecrackers, so Sabrina kept him company for a bit…

    Tp 2

But not even a sweet, nervous puppy could keep Bean from racing her little sister to catch the parachuters that fell from the sky…

Btw, I can't believe I didn't get any pictures of my dad, bc he was the Head Pyro Guy that night.. we won't mention to my mother how he almost set an entire load of mulch on fire. Or when something in the street was on fire, and he casually walked over and patiently poked it with a large stick until the flames died down. (He used to be a firefighter, so I suppose flaming mulch or unidentified burning objects don't bother him much.)

Anyway, I hope you all had a fantastic July 4th celebration!  Cody, if you're reading this, thank you for stopping by to visit the fam! :)  And Bre, if you're reading this, hurry up and come back home bc we miss you!

    Dads and Daughters

In about an hour we'll be heading to my parents' house to celebrate Independence Day, but before we leave I thought I'd share some photos from last night. Mike, Sophie, and my dad and I went to a Stormchasers game at the new Werner Park, where we watched a brilliant fireworks show afterward.

    Game tp 1

And now it's time for a little game called "Who is happier to be with their dad?"… Good luck in your guesses!

    Here's a closer look…

That's my camera on the left, Mike looking at the big screen on the right and wondering how he got to be so handsome, and Joonbug in the middle, flexing her muscles for everyone in the stadium.

After the game we headed down onto the field to watch the fireworks show…

It was a really enjoyable night, and I think I speak for all the daughters in this post when I say that we love our dads very much.

    Happy Independence Day!

P.S. I was supposed to bring Puny's Potato Salad to my parents' house for the cookout tonight, but I left the potatoes to cook too long, and now we're having mashed potatoes. I went ahead and added the bacon drippings though (and a dash of garlic), and they're delicious! But if any of you out there are making Puny's Potato Salad tonight, please eat an extra helping for me. And Mom, who will never let me live this down.

The College World Series (and other shenanigans)

I don't know much about baseball teams. I know how to play baseball (one of my favorite things to do is play catch with a glove on), and I swoon over like how baseball uniforms look, but as far as following who is playing, who is winning, or who is using HGH, I'm pretty much clueless. Despite that, I do enjoy attending one game during the CWS. It doesn't have to be any game in particular, but I do like to go for the excitement of it all.

This year was the first year it wasn't at Rosenblatt Stadium, which was bittersweet for people in general. I loved the nostalgia of Rosenblatt.. it was fun looking around at all the young fans, wearing their favorite teams' jerseys and ballcaps, probably dreaming of some day playing there. The new stadium – TD Ameritrade Park – is an impressive, state-of-the-art arena. But the smalltown feel is gone.

So it's out with the old, and in with the bold!

    Tp 2

This is one of Mike's good friends and partner-in-reducing-crime, J-Mart…

    Tp 3

And he's the one who took this picture:

    Tp 1

These are a few of the merchandise stands, just across the street from the stadium…

    Tp 4

    Tp 5

    Hi, Joonie!

    Tp 6

Mike and Bre are huge Texas fans, so it was a sad day when the Longhorns were eliminated. Here they are, paying their respects under the burnt orange banner…

    Tp 7

This is the first thing I saw upon entering the stadium:

    Tp 8

What I loved about TD Ameritrade is that no matter where you stood, you got a fantastic view of the field… (this was just to the right of that Gluten-Free stand)

    Tp 9

    Go, orange dudes!

    Tp 10

    Go, guys in yellow!

    Tp 11

Breanna is usually embarrassed by my sports ignorance. But since she worries that I really will yell, "GO ORANGE DUDES!" she chooses not to make fun of me. Wise girl.

    Tp 12

Sophie's just here for the Dippin' Dots.

    Tp 13

    Tp 14

After the game, it was time for the usual Stewart tradition of Mike spending way too much money on souvenirs for the girls.

I have no idea who won the game, btw.

    Tp 15

Sabrina wasn't feeling very well, so she didn't come to the game with us… we missed you, Bean!

    Tp 16

On our way back to the parking garage, we passed the Qwest Center, where we stopped to look at all of the unusual art in front of the Qwest's entrance…

    Tp 21

    Tp 17

    Yes, Mike, I see you…

    Tp 22

    Tp 19

    Tp 23

(Is it just me, or is someone really yelling, "Over here! Look at me!")

    Tp 18

    Tp 20

Okay, we should probably go before this gets ugly…

    Tp 24

It must be a boy thing. Check out the kids to the right.

I miss Rosenblatt, where the seats are painted blue, the tail-gaters are the friendliest you'll find, and the sculptures are too high to reach.

    Puny’s Potato Salad

I can't believe how many emails I've gotten from people asking me to post the potato salad recipe I made for Sabrina's graduation party! So I've posted it to Four Seasons Cafe, for those who are interested… it is truly the best-tasting potato salad I've ever tasted, and it came from the book Jan Karon's Mitford Cookbook & Kitchen Reader. (If you don't already have this cookbook in your reportoire, you're missing out! It's so much fun, particularly if you're a Mitford fan like I am.)

    Cobbler!

I finally got around to dusting off the Four Seasons Cafe blog and posting a recipe. I've been in a crazy baking mood lately, and this time I chose Rhubarb Cobbler from Pioneer Woman. If you'd like to hear how it turned out, head on over! If not, then I guess I'll be et fer a tater.

(If you like Jan Karon's Mitford books, you're probably familiar with that last phrase, which has nothing to do with cobbler, but I wasn't sure how else to end that sentence.)

I'm in the mood for taters now.

    House-Sitting

One of the many reasons my girls love to visit my parents' house is bc they have the most beautiful yard, full of happy gardens, well-fed birds, and one joyous Golden Retriever.

I had the pleasure of house-sitting for my parents recently, and one of my duties included keeping my mother's flowers watered. (Usually she also writes "deadhead all 4 million petunias DAILY!" on my list of chores, but she forgot to write it this time, which made me feel like I'd won the lottery.)

On one early evening last week, I decided to take a stroll through the yard, and I brought my camera along. The sun was getting ready to go down, and there was a slight breeze that caused the windchime that hangs just outside the door to sway…

    Tp 1

I walked down the steps of the deck into the most beautiful, sunny yard…

    Dandelions

I have no idea what variety of yellow flowers these are, but they were everywhere! No wonder the kids love to frolic when they're here!

    DANDELIONS-IN-FIELD

Oh, wait a second. I was pulling pictures from my back yard. Oopsies! hehehe?

Here are some from her yard, starting with a windowbox just behind the windchime…

    Tp 2

    Tp 3

It's fun to look around and spot something unusual…

    Tp 6

Some of you have probably met Major, Friday's brother; he's such a sweet boy, full of sunshine and oh-so-high on life…

    Tp 4

I love these, even though they're spent. Something about their delicate look is just so charming to me…

    Tp 7

    Tp 8

    An urn, way out back…

    Tp 9

    Tp 11

This little caterpillar has hung here so long, the bark of the tree grew around its hanger…

    Tp 19

    Tp 10

Like I said, one never knows what unusual things one will spot…

    Tp 12

    Was that your doing?

    Tp 5

    Tp 14

This is another spent flower that looks beautiful to me… They were once daisies, but now they look like little pincushions on a stem…

    Tp 13

    Tp 15

    My favorite flowers…

    Tp 16

    Tp 20

    Tp 21

    Tp 17

The only bad thing about getting down on the ground to take these pictures is it gets the attention of Major. If I'm not on my guard, I'll get this boy coming at me like a freight train and I'll end up in a full body cast…

    Tp 18

So far, I've made it up off the ground before he reaches me.

Here's a garden pick that is stuck in some rocks that surround a little fountain…

    Tp 23

Oh great. There is literally no hiding from this boy.

    Tp 24

    Getupgetupgetupgetupget UP!!

    Tp 25

I breathe a sigh of relief that he was just overjoyed about getting a drink…

    Tp 22

The sun was getting lower, and I decided it was time to go back to my yellow gardens at home. It truly was enjoyable walking through my parents' yard – especially since there was no deadheading to do. 😉

But the next time I have to house-sit, I should probably wear a suit of armor… just in case.

    Tp 26

*Edited to add: After Joann's comment, I must tell you that I truly don't have dandelions in my yard – I was just kidding bc I knew Mom would insist they were mine! But they're not either of ours. (Hi, Joann!) 🙂 The first dandelion photo came from here, and the second one came from here.

    Summer Trip (and a video)

Right after graduation, my sister whisked Sabrina off on a whirlwind summer vacation that included places like the Alamo, shopping, Sea World, shopping, beaches, Schlitterbahn, shopping, Six Flags, cupcake shops, and finally a little bit of shopping. I know there were other places in there as well, but I can't think of them all on only 3 cups of coffee.

Grind me some beans and cut me some slack, will ya?

Sabrina took all of her pictures on her cell phone, and I've grabbed a few to show you. I'm also sharing a video she took (on her new Flip camcorder) of Natalie trying to learn Bruno Mars' "Count On Me." It's such a sweet song, and the drama Natalie puts forth in her efforts to belt out the chorus is so funny! (Her eyebrows get me every time.)

Btw, the video is a little long (2 1/2 minutes), but I couldn't figure out how to trim anything out of the middle…  Great job singing your numbers, Neenee!

    Good News

I can't thank all of you enough who took the time to write in and leave comments about Sabrina's surgery. How nice it is to know that people are thinking about us and praying. Thank you!

It was a long day at the hospital, and Sophie was looking forward to getting up early and going with us; however, I do believe the wait got to be a bit too uneventful for her…

    Tp 2

Sabrina is recovering well, and we got the news yesterday that the growth in her throat was a benign polyp. Thank the Lord! We're loving the sound of her new voice, and even her friends are amazed at the difference. (Sabrina has sounded sick and stuffy for the past 1-2 years, so that we never got to hear what she was supposed to sound like.) And because the polyp was taking up so much of her airway, she had a difficult time breathing – especially at night.  She said she still can't get over how much air she gets now in just one small breath!

The things I take for granted.

Thank You, Lord, for knowing all along that my girl was just fine. I love You.
