    A Day with Sophie

Soph and I decided to enjoy the beautiful weather a few days ago, so after her appointment for a new hair-do (she got a short bob), we headed to Runza and then out to picnic at a nearby lake.

    Soph tp1

My child has a whole arsenal of poses.

We walked around the lake a bit, and came upon a sweet mama and her babies…

    Soph tp 3

(I was using my purse camera, and the ones of the ducks are a bit hazy for some reason. Maybe a bit too much sun bouncing off the water and all the white feathers!)

    Soph tp 2

Suddenly, the mama duck started making little noises at her kids, rounding them up to leave…

    Soph tp 4

Soon we saw why: the Bird Mafia was in town.

    Soph tp 5

It was fascinating how all the other ducks cleared the path when they came through.

At this point, Sophie started pleading with me to vacate the premises, as she and her dad have had a run-in with a goose or two on a past adventure. But I wanted to keep snapping pictures!

    Soph tp 8

And then I decided Sophie was right. So I rounded up my kid and left with the ducks.

After all, I'd rather not end up swimming with the fishes.

    Hyuk hyuk.

    Opposable

You know you're bored when you decide to have a thumb war… with yourself.

On this lazy summer day (heaven help me through many more to come), my Sophie decided to entertain herself by having her thumbs duke it out.

    Thumb war tp 6

I was supposed to be working, but I couldn't tear my eyes away. I'm not sure if I was fascinated by what I was witnessing, or worried about the mental health of my youngest child.

    Thumb war tp 5

    Thumb war tp 4

When I found myself wondering which thumb would win, I realized I needed to quickly regain control of my wits.

    Thumb war tp 3

I think I stood there and watched for about 6 minutes.

That's 6 minutes of my life I will never get back.

    Decisions

Well, thanks to my good pal Carol Sims giving me permission to do as I please, I've decided not to release the Noah's Ark piece for the St. Charles market. There is absolutely no way I can finish it in time, so rather than stress about it like I have been doing, I've decided to take my time on it and shoot for Nashville. It was either stitch solely on Noah and have nothing else to release, or work on some other ideas I've got and push Noah back a bit farther.

Once I made the decision, my day brightened up considerably! I assembled the supplies to start a new model and got busy. 🙂

I know, Mom. I'm sorry if I can't be PERFECTLY organized like you. But I'm also happier than you. teehee.

I've had a great day today, btw! Went to the track and pulled a groin muscle (I've never done that before, so it was a new life experience)(do girls have groin muscles?), went grocery shopping at Target and had no coupons (no room in my purse for them bc of all the old receipts), made a brand new and absolutely delicious Mexican casserole and ate it by myself (no one was home and I didn't feel like figuring out where they all were)(or waiting for them to get home), went to the camera shop and… well, we won't go there… and now I'm sitting here drinking coffee and not hearing any dog noises (which probably means The Yorkie has had another on-purpose on my carpeting and is in hiding).

At least I don't have to work on Noah.

    Deutschland!

    I miss my Sabrina.

Remember back in March when Julia-from-Germany came to stay with us? Sabrina is participating in the German Exchange program, and they matched Julia with our family. What a lovely, sweet girl Julia was (is)!

    Julia tp 2

She and Bean were great friends right from the start. (Thanks to modern technology, they had gotten to know each other over Skype visits and Facebook.) One of the cutest things about Julia was that when she found out Sabrina's nickname is "Bean," she always called her that – and in a very serious tone. (We all just sort of bark it out at her: "BEAN! HEY BEAN! GO CLEAN YOUR ROOM, BEAN!") Julia would say quietly, "Bean?" and then ask her a question. (I tried speaking quietly to Bean like that for a while, but she never seemed to hear me when it came to the cleaning her room part.)

Five days ago, it was Sabrina's turn to visit Julia's family. The exchange group (I believe there are about 20 of them, plus chaperones) arrived at the airport, and Sabrina and her best friend Katie were extremely excited.

    Germany tp 1

Since Sabrina had packed so many gifts for her host family (including a 1-pound bag of Reese's Pieces for Julia, which she requested), she was 4 pounds over the weight limit for her suitcase. Since Katie was 2 pounds under the limit, they did what all besties do and switched over some things to Katie's suitcase. 🙂

    Germany tp 2

Here's part of the group looking over their itineraries…

    Germany tp 5

    Bye, Dad!

    Germany tp 4

    Bye, Sophie!

    Germany tp 3

Breanna was at home, but Sabrina said that when she crept into Brea's room early that morning to say goodbye, Brea grabbed her and hugged her warmly and told Sabrina she loved her. This almost caused us all to have to skip the airport and take Brea to the ER. After all, my girls are no different than any other quarreling, snippetting sisters on any given day.

The group was ready to leave, and Katie and Bean were the last ones to say goodbye. I lost count of how many hugs I got from my girl!

    And then she was off…

    Germany tp 6

The last time she was at this airport, it was to pick up a new friend…

    Julia tp 1

This time, it was to visit an "old" one…

We'll miss you so much, Sabrina! Come back to us with lots of souvenirs soon!

    So Thankful

I made a booboo on Breanna's goal! Her web page for Relay for Life (in the post from yesterday) said that she was supposed to reach $100, but her Team Captain told her that this year's goal for each team member is $350. I wasn't aware that was the case, and Breanna wasn't aware I posted it here! (She was very surprised and very grateful, btw, and eventually she'll figure out how to change that posted goal…)

Thank you SO MUCH to those of you who donated! Whether you've lost someone to cancer personally or just want to help the American Cancer Society, we sincerely thank you for your generosity.

    Relay for Life

Every year for the past 6 years Breanna has been participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event. This year she's planning on being on the Collegiate Crew (again!), which is a team organized by one of Breanna's very first playmates, Alex. (They've been friends for a really long time! Alex is the one in the olive green t-shirt, and Brea is the second person in from the right – the one holding her RFL shirt instead of wearing it, bc she had just gotten off of work…)

    Relay for life 09

I don't normally post things like this, but I thought I'd share with you Breanna's RFL webpage, just in case anyone has any interest in helping her achieve her goal of raising $100 for her team. (She has no idea I'm doing this, and Brea has always had an extremely hard time asking people for money – which is great from a parent's point of view, but not in the case of a fundraiser!)

I definitely understand that money can be tight these days, so please don't feel any obligation whatsoever. I'm just asking for donations to this cause if you feel you can help.

Btw, if you click on the link and are startled at Breanna's "new look," don't worry – that's not Brea. :) I believe it is another team member?

    Thank you so much.
