    See You Soon!

Tomorrow I'll be headed to Virginia Beach for the retreat at Dyeing to Stitch this weekend. I'm so excited to be one of the teachers there this year, and I look forward to meeting lots of new stitching friends! For those of you attending, I hope you all like what I've put together for you. 🙂

Thank you to my oldest daughter, Bre, for coming up with the little extra that's in the kit, and to Sophie for lots of bagging and clipping and sticking and stacking.  And thank you to Sabrina for her visits from school to keep me company as I kitted, and thank you to Mike for putting up with the neverending boxes sitting around, either waiting to be unpacked or waiting to be broken down and taken to the trash. 🙂

I leave you with a picture of little Effy Thimbles, who used to claim my dough bowl for her napping spot when she would visit. She's almost too big for the bowl now!

    The Arch

    Hi there!

I thought I'd hop back on here and show you all just a little bit of what we did as we were leaving the needlework market a couple of weeks ago… Mike grew up in St.Louis, so he was excited to visit the city just a bit and hopefully take us down memory lane.. needless to say, Sophie and I were dreading very excited about this, and he glanced over every half-mile or so while we were on the interstate, wondering if he should take this exit or that in order to get to his alma mater, Garfield Elementary School.

"Do you think any of my old teachers still teach there?" he would ask occasionally.

Most likely he was fantasizing about how he would run (in slow motion) through the school yard, waving a bright shining apple over his head like a trophy, and have old Miss Elderpants greet him with open arms and exclaim affectionately, "Mikey! You haven't changed a bit!"

And that's when I'd say, "No, he hasn't; he still talks too much," throwing a heavy wet blanket onto his whole daydream.

Och, it wasn't that bad. We never found Garfield, but we did head toward Jefferson Park, following Mike's lead to the Arch.

    St. Louis05

Sophie had a pretty bad blister on her foot, so she decided to go barefoot.

    St. Louis07

The day was incredibly hot and muggy, but the park was still very pretty, which made the long walk enjoyable.

    St. Louis08

    St. Louis13

I had no idea that there was a very cool museum under the Arch! I really enjoyed it, and could have spent much longer there… most of these pictures are of quotes I took for my mom, because she loves to read anything related to the pioneering of America…

    St. Louis23

    St. Louis24

    St. Louis25

    St. Louis26

Mike and I loved the spelling!

    St. Louis27

These are all excerpts from the diary of William Clark (of Lewis and Clark)…

    St. Louis28

The last sentence of the following clip was my favorite… I wonder if he was specifically referring to God's creation of what he had been journaling about, or just the natural structure and beauty of everything?

    St. Louis29

This was a replica general store, which had lots of fun things in there.. repro cookbooks, ladies' housekeeping books, quil and ink sets, and Sophie's favorite, saltwater taffy. (I'm not sure who that lady in the photo is.)

    St. Louis30

    St. Louis31

We had to keep an eye on the clock because we yet had 7 hours to drive in front of us, and Sophie had school the next day. So we hurried to the loading station to ride up to the Arch.

Here was the door we were told to stand in front of. It was only about 4 1/2 feet high..

    St. Louis37

If I'd known that we were going to be crammed into this little pod for roughly 5 uncomfortable minutes, I'm not sure I would have been on board.  By the way, what you see in the photo looks like a toilet seat, but it's not.. its just the back of one of the tiny seats available to sit on. There were 5 seats per unit, situated in a very tight  circle…

    St. Louis38

And to add to the discomfort of the tight quarters, Mikey had his chatterbox turned on, all the way to the top.

I will admit though, it was a pretty neat sight up there. 🙂

    St. Louis42

And it will be our secret that while we were up there, I may have spotted Garfield. 😉

    Market!

I am finally coming up for air! Thank you for being so patient with me for orders and emails and now this overdue blog post.

I accidentally typed "blob post," and I probably should have left it like that because that's what I feel like today!

Market was such a wonderful, exciting time for me, and I am so happy I finally got to meet so many of you in person.. what a pleasure that was! Especially for Sophie, who got to hear more than a few dozen times, "You're Sophie! I know you from your mom's blog!" She loved every bit of it though, and still teases me that we weren't in the hotel for a solid minute when someone called out her name. (Hi Mona-from-the-Silver-Needle!)

Here are a few pictures from around the suites I visited… I never made it off my floor except one time, and I didn't have my camera with me then. I'm really bummed because there were so many people I didn't get to meet, let alone take pictures of their new designs. But the few booths I did make it into were gracious enough to allow me to photograph their lovely things, so here they are, if you'd care to take a look. (I'm sure you've seen several of these types of photos around the blogosphere lately!)

We'll start with my next-door neighbor, who is new to market this year. What a fabulous designer she is, with an equally-fabulous family!

    Market87

Her room was wonderful, and Sophie said it smelled delicious, like green tea. I was too taken with her displays and the banjo music in the background to notice the aroma, but she did have a very cool corner with chocolates and beverages (that I didn't get a picture of)…

    Market16

    Market19

    Market21

    Market20

A little farther down the hall was Needlework Press… (Vickie's precious grandbaby was there as well, and what a little doll Zoe is!)

    Market24

    Market27

    Market29

Chessie and Me's room was gorgeous… and there's something about her models that makes them so photogenic! I think I could take pictures of her models all day.

    Market59

    Market58

    Market57

    Market62

Let's go back the other way down the hall now…

    Market30

    Walk faster…

Here we've come to The Purple Thread… This was my first time meeting Sharon, and I just loved her!

    Market84

    This was so cute!

    Market81

    Market80

Hang on, Mike, we'll be in shortly…

    Market05

By the way, that lens he's holding is actually a very cool coffee mug that my sweet friend Connie gave to me! Isn't it the neatest thing?

    Market77

It came in very handy that weekend. Thank you so much, Connie!

    Market78

Next to The Purple Thread was Blackbird Designs. It's always a treat to go in their room!

    Market40

    Market38

This hooked rug, in front of their "fireplace," made me swoon…

    Market48

    Market39

    Market43

    Market44

    Market45

I'm super disappointed I didn't make it to R&R's room earlier in the day, because I could have shown you linen nirvana… but I did manage to take a picture of the little bit that was left…

    Market34

Pat and Ann were kind enough to send me home with some of their hand-dyed trims and some beautiful linens,  and right now I'm loving Old Towne Blend. What a beautiful, soft color.. I'm in love! Thank you, Pat and Ann!

And of course, what's a market without Shepherd's Bush? Sophie loved their room best, bc she was taken with the rows of bags waiting to be claimed by their owners. She said, "If I was a shop owner, I'd buy stuff from them just to get their bag."

    Market50

    Market49

My very first linen project, back in 1992'ish, was a Shepherd's Bush design. I've been a fan ever since!

    Market51

I probably should have broken this post down to two days, but I'll keep going…

La D Da! Love love love La D Da!

    Market56

My heart loves this one best, and I was lucky enough to be gifted with the chart and silks by a friend that is very dear to me. (Thank you again, my very dear friend…)

    Market53

    Market55

    Market54

Another neighbor close by was Dames of the Needle/Fingerwork. It was my first time meeting Elizabeth, and what fun we had!

    Market89

    Market94

This was just the cutest thing…

    Market92

    Market91

    Market90

And finally, we have my room… I hadn't been to a market since 2007, so I forgot about how challenging it was to make everything fit where you need it to fit!

    Market06

My dad built my shelving, which I was very grateful for!

    Market12

    Market75

    I brought a few older things too…

    Market10

I had Salem Sisters III hanging over a lamp, and I loved the spooky light that was cast on it. But I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who noticed the way the spooky light was shining on it. Ha!

    Market65

    Market70

    Market69

    Market67

And there you have it! Hopefully I'll get out to other floors next time, because I can only imagine all the fun I missed. But I couldn't stay away from the room too long, because Big Papa tends to tell tall tales in my absence; I even had someone tell me it was awfully nice of me to do the stitching for all these patterns Mike designed.

    Say what?

Until next market! Thank you for stopping by. 🙂

    Market86

P.S. On Sunday evening, there was a knock on our room's door, and sweet Teri from Shepherd's Bush was holding one of their booth's bags for Sophie, complete with a Shepherd's Bush purple t-shirt inside. 🙂 Now that's a very sweet thing!

  • Crazy Kids,  Family,  Fridays with Bre,  Friends,  Music,  Travel

    Cheese.

For a few years now, my oldest daughter Bre has been trying to convince me that I'd love her style of music if I'd give it a try – particularly if I'd give her favorite band (introduced to her by Josh), The String Cheese Incident, a chance. I love all sorts of music, but never actually listen to any, because I prefer the sound of peace and quiet (which usually sounds like a pot of coffee brewing and perhaps a DVD of Lark Rise to Candleford playing on the set in front of me-and-my-stitching).

However, a few months ago I found myself saying "sure" to her invitation to join she and Josh at Red Rocks in Colorado, and up until the day I left, I was pretty much a nervous wreck over it. What if the night lasts too long and I can't stay awake? What if I'm surrounded by hooligans who start body surfing? What if I can't find a quiet spot to stitch in? WHAT IF THERE'S NO COFFEE?

I'm here today because I survived it. And not only did I survive it, I had one of the best nights of my life! Bre and Josh were the most accomodating, fun adult couple to hang out with, and as I was getting dressed this morning, I was bummed that I didn't buy a concert tee shirt to put on.

Here are Bre and I in the hotel room before the show:

    IMG_2021E

    And with Josh:

    IMG_2023E

When we arrived at Red Rocks Ampitheater, I was amazed at how beautiful it was!

    IMG_2026E

(If you follow Bre on Instagram, you'll remember that she won that really cool Kelly Moore camera bag/backpack that she's wearing.)

    IMG_2025E

The sun was very hot and very hazy, but Josh warned me not to complain about the heat, because as soon as someone does, the sky opens up and the rain falls in bucketloads, and then it's freezing the rest of the night.

    IMG_2029E

We walked through what's known as "Shakedown Street," because that's where lots of vendors sell their wares – jewelry, tee shirts, art work – and Bre's koozies! She had some made especially for the weekend, and she sold tons of them!

    Photo(11)

(Josh was her koozie caddie, reaching into his backpack and refilling her handfull when she'd run out.)

    IMG_2035E2

(I love how talented she is… for those of you who have gotten one of my little lip balms in a class kit, she helped me design those as well!)

I bought these crazy pants to wear to the show, as well as the necklace I'm wearing (which has a clay pendant of the SCI logo), but as soon as the show was over, I gave them both to Bre.  She was happy to adopt them, as they're much more her style than mine. (But it was fun wearing something out of the ordinary for a change.)

    IMG_2032E

These two are so fun to hang out with! This was before the show started. (And by the way, Katrina mentioned once that Josh looks like a young Matt Lauer, and I have to agree!)

    Photo(62)E

Incidentally (see what I did there?), Josh is a very calm, laid-back kind of guy. He's always soft-spoken and pleasant, and I was planning on sitting by him for the most part while Bre danced the night away. However, as soon as the band members walked out on stage, I was jerked out of my comfort zone by a never-before-seen Josh that one can only describe as the mildly wild sort…

    IMG_2054BWOS

    IMG_2053E

I need my cross stitch, I need my cross stitch, I need my cross stitch….

Truth be told, I never laughed so hard! These two were an absolute joy to watch, the way they danced and had so much fun, singing along to the songs they love and stopping frequently to see if I was still breathing.

    IMG_2046E

What a fantastic night! The music, the food (hot dogs, Philly steak sandwiches, and lots of peanut M&M's), and the friendliness of everyone there; young people, old people, and lots of children, all having the same wonderful time I was having.

    IMG_2056E2

    Photo(64)E

    Photo(65)E

But best of all, I got to spend time with my girl. My sweet, talented, artistic, music-loving girl.

    Photo(63)E

Thank you for a wonderful time, Bre. I love you. And I love Cheese.

    Shepherd’s Retreat, Finale

I'm finally back with the rest of the pictures! (No, not the rest of the 180, but just a few I thought you might enjoy seeing!)

These aren't in any particular order, so I'll just post them how I find them. 🙂

Here is one from the Shepherd's Boutique.. I thought Jill Rensel did an amazing job on Button's Black; as usual, her artwork on mats is amazing:

    SB tp-1-3

I loved this one from Chessie and Me…

    SB tp-2-3

Since I explained in my last blog post how I didn't get a full photo of the Shepherd's Bush project, a few of you kindly emailed some pictures for me. Thank you! Here is Susan Ream's photo of Three Ships…

    Three Ships tp

Btw, I still can't get over how warmly I was welcomed throughout the entire retreat. I even received some lovely surprises from some of the attendees, and I can't thank you all enough! Your generosity was so touching, and I will always remember these special gifts to me. Here are some of the lovely things presented to me…

    SB tp-6

    SB tp-7

Here's the back of the above pendant – the very pendant Bre tried to woo me out of when she spotted it…

    SB tp-8

    SB tp-5

And here is a pendant from Charland Designs… she had so many cool ones! I think Sabrina had her eye on this one, btw. 😉

    SB tp-9

    And here's the back:

    SB tp-10

Even Sophie got some gifts, which thrilled her to death!

    SB tp-14

Here are a few of the sweet ladies in one of my classes…

    SB tp-4-3

Every morning, the Shepherd's Bush girls would go from classroom to classroom and deliver the most wonderful little wrapped gifts! I don't have photos of them, unfortunately, but they were needlework-related, and so very sweet to receive!

During the day, there were some of us who boarded the gondola to ride up the mountain. The Aspens were gorgeous!

    SB tp-1

Lots of dudes on mountain bikes were there as well, and you can spot one of them in the middle of the photo below. Charland's daughter, Sydney, couldn't find a single willing soul to make the bike trek down the mountain with her. I was very tempted to join her at one point, but then I suddenly realized that I don't like fear very much, so I declined.

    SB tp-2

    SB tp-3

Here are some of the things we got to make at the Cookie Swap… each person got to choose a tin to carry to different stations that were set up. At each station, we were taught how to make a certain type of "cookie," and we used our tin to store them in. I thought the whole idea was so much fun!

    SB tp-1-2

We made a Sandwich Cookie, a Truffle, and a Pinwheel Cookie. There were even little charms we got to attach to the tops of our Sandwich cookies…

    SB tp-2-2

Remember when I told you Cecelia Strickland of Threadgatherers not only painted fibers, but she also makes soaps and lotions and lip balms?

    SB tp-11

They all smell amazing! I've got the mousse on my hands right now, and I can't stop raising my hands to my face and inhaling. It's delicious!

    SB tp-13

And isn't the keychain the coolest thing?

    SB tp-12

On our last night, we all met in the ballroom for the Fa La La Feast. The table settings were so festive, and everyone was very excited to be there – whether for the ornament exchange or the food or the Christmas Trivia game or the husbands all getting up front to sing a jolly Christmas carol, each of us had a marvelous time. Teri and Tina are the most gracious hosts!

    SB tp-5-2

    SB tp-7-2

    SB tp-6-2

    SB tp-8-2

    SB tp-9-2

I love this picture of Teri and Cece…

    SB tp-12-2

    …and Charland and Linda…

    SB tp-3-3

Here is a small portion of the ornaments, all ready for the swapping…

    SB tp-11-2

At the end of the night, Teri and Tina had one last gift for each person, whether they were naughty or nice. Judging from the collective "oooooh" in the room when everyone opened their stocking'ed gift, I'd say the Shepherd's Bush girls made a very good call with what they gave…

    SB tp-4-2

….even if I got one that said "naughty!" 😉

    SB tp-3-2

I'll leave you with a room full of happy guests, wearing their paper crowns that came from holiday crackers… everyone crossed arms and "cracked" them at the same time, to see what sort of toy was inside. That was so much fun to do!

    SB tp-10-2

If ever you get the chance to attend a Shepherd's Retreat in the future, I highly recommend you treat yourself and go. The only downside to going to one, I've found, is that you don't really want to leave. The scenery, shopping, and stitching are all so much fun, but I found that the real gifts of the heart were the new friends I made.

I sure enjoyed meeting you all and getting to spend some time with you. Thank you, thank you, and thank you again!

    Shepherd’s Retreat, Part 2

Goodness, I've been going crazy around here trying to get ready for my October release! My "to do" pile is larger than life, so forgive me for taking so long to post the next set of photos. 🙁

Teri and Tina chose the most gorgeous place for the retreat! We stayed at The Canyons in the Rocky Mountains, and between the beautiful lodgings and the Aspens turning their coats for fall, it was truly heavenly.

    Canyons tp

    SB tp-3-2

This was my room (I had the upstairs loft, with my own fireplace, sitting room, and two bathrooms)…

    SB tp-2-2

    Here was the kitchen…

    SB tp-1-3

And this was the view from my balcony. Every morning the moon would sit right on the edge of one of those mountain peaks, looking as if it was ready to roll right down…

    SB tp-4-2

After we were checked in and settled, we were on our own for dinner and then that night we returned to the ball room for a really fun project called The Great Cookie Swap. We made the most fabulous little ornaments from felted wool, and I can't wait to hang them on my tree this year.

The next evening we got to take a class with Cece Strickland of Threadgatherers. She taught us how to make a darling little wool booklet for our stitching supplies, and we learned a stitch that was new to me: the boullion stitch. (Mine looked more like the bull-kaka stitch.)

And what a sweet surprise this was: a gluten-free dessert, before the start of the class!

    GF dessert tp

Also attending the class was Linda of Chessie and Me, Jeanette of Jeanette Douglas Designs, and Judy, who makes the best lemon biscotti in the universe. Mike has pretty much snarfed all of the bag she sent home with me.

    SB tp-7-2

Btw, the Shepherd's Bush girls set up a boutique full of fun things to shop, as well as mini trunk shows for the designers attending. It was so much fun to look around! I didn't get a whole lot of photos of the boutique bc the shopping crowd was steady, but I did manage to snap a few models and trinkets here and there…

    SB tp-9-2

(The model below is by From the Heart – Needleart by Wendy)

    SB tp-8-2

    SB tp-10-2

    SB tp-15-2

Jeanette didn't know she was in my camera frame, but you can see that she's getting ready to cause trouble…

    SB tp-12-2

    See what I mean?

    SB tp-14-2

And speaking of Jeanette, I couldn't stop staring at these pincushions! And the ornaments she designed! I shall be making them all!

    SB tp-11-2

    SB tp-16-2

    SB tp-17-2

I love how Teri and Tina changed the colors of Garden of Eerie to a colorway more similar to their signature palette. Pink clouds! I love it!

    SB tp-13-2

I wish I'd gotten more pictures of the boutique.. many of the ones I took were blurred from excitement, so they ended up on the cutting room floor. 🙁 But trust me when I say that there were some gorgeous things there.

So far, I've tried keeping the photos in order, but I won't be able to keep that up bc I'm forgetting which days we did what. 🙂 So here's a random picture of a gorgeous barn we passed on our way to lunch in downtown Park City:

    SB tp-6-2

We ate at Robert Redford's restaurant that day, called Zoom. The food was absolutely delicious, and I highly recommend eating there if you're ever in the area.

    Zoom tp

And I liked that none of the glassware matched. 🙂

    SB tp-5-2

(Btw, we shared the Marinated Roasted Beets and I had the fish tacos for my lunch.)

I'll end Part 2 with the only photo of the Shepherd's Bush project I got. (You can slap me if you ever see me in person.) It was gorgeous, needless to say, but I must have gotten interrupted after this photo since I didn't get a picture of the entire thing.

    SB tp-18-2

If you haven't given up on me yet, I'll be back with Part 3 soon!

    Haven’t Forgotten!

I'm so sorry for those of you who are patiently waiting for more retreat pictures! I've been busy out of my tree, to say the least. My October online needlework show release is behind, so I've got to get on the ball with that one, but I will be back very soon to post more photos from Park City!

In the meantime, here are some delicious fabrics that were in the Shepherd's Boutique in the hotel. They were all so soft and wonderful, and I watched for what seemed like hours as Teri pulled each one from its box and gently placed it on its shelf.

Ah, the little things that we stitchers love to gaze at…

    SB tp-1-2

    See you soon!

    Shepherd’s Retreat – Day 1

I've got all 180 photos loaded from the retreat, so go brew some coffee and get comfy! I'm kidding – there were 180 photos, but I won't burden your computer with all of them, no worries. For those of you who stopped by bc you'd like to see them, I'll break them up into manageable sections. 🙂

My flight to Salt Lake City was a short one, and I had the pleasure of sitting next to three other retreat attendees – Michelle, Edie, and Sylvia. What fun ladies they were, and if I wasn't excited about attending before, then I sure was after listening to all of their fun descriptions of how past retreats had gone. If any of you three are reading, thank you for making me feel welcome before I ever even got to Utah!

Sweet Mindy picked me up at the airport.. Teri had told me she was a darling, and she was. Mindy, you were a wonderful "chauffeur!"

Here we are across the street from Temple Square…

    Mindy and Me tp

While we were there, she and I took a general tour of the Tabernacle and surrounding gardens, which was very interesting. The architecture is astounding…

    SB tp-4

And the gardens are vibrant and beautiful…

    SB tp-7

Inside, we got to see a scaled model of the Temple, which is only open to the public for a short time following its completion. After that, the Temple is dedicated to God, and the public is not allowed in.

    SB tp-1

    SB tp-2

There was also a scaled model of the city of Jerusalem.. the photo doesn't quite show how enormous this model really is. I can't imagine how long it took to build it!

    SB tp-8

There were many reproductions of wagons and tools used by the Mormon pioneers who settled here to build their new life…

    SB tp-3

These are some of the original glass panes; in person, you can see all the ripples in them…

    SB tp-6

And take a look at that pipe organ! This is where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs and records their music…

    SB tp-5

When our tour was over, Mindy and I headed to lunch at the Blue Lemon Cafe across the street, and then it was time for the drive to Ogden. First stop: Jill Rensel's studio! Can I just tell you that Jill is as charming and lovely in person as I imagined her to be? What a beautiful person she is, and I must have had a hundred people ask me if I got the chance to meet her. She's quite popular, yet ever so humble and soft-spoken.

Here she is with Mindy, who is holding her sweet little pooches (who were as gentle-natured as Jill, and nothing like the Yorkie that resides in the Stewart home)…

    SB-21 BW tp

And needless to say, her shop is amazing, full of framed and matted pieces waiting to be picked up or shipped out…

    SB tp-10

    SB tp-11

Someone had even stitched Brother's Keeper over one.. I wasn't able to stay there and get a decent shot of the frame itself as there was quite a crowd there, but I did manage to get a sliver of the piece photographed…

    SB tp-12

After Jill's, Mindy drove me to the Shepherd's Bush shop… please pass the smelling salts; this place is fabulous. The building used to be an old blacksmith's shop, so you can imagine how much elbow grease it took Tina and Teri to get the place converted to one of the lovliest needlework shops in the country.

I actually didn't get to spend very long in the shop bc it was soon time to load up the vehicles and head up the mountain to the retreat. But I do plan on returning some day… how can I resist?

Btw, Mindy was quite the sweetheart, driving me around and making sure my blood-caffeine levels were normal. I believe she's visiting the Attic Needlework shop in Mesa, AZ as we speak (another of my dream shops), so if you're reading this, Mindy, I'm so happy Teri and Tina decided to volunteer you to be my taxi. 🙂

I'll be back soon with more fun from the retreat!

    Shepherd’s Retreat

Oh my goodness, if you only knew how inspired I am after attending Tina and Teri's retreat this past week! What a fabulous show those ladies put on.. and the warm reception and kindness from all the attendees was completely overwhelming to me. For those of you who attended and are reading, thank you, thank you, thank you!

I also had the honor of meeting some of the most wonderful ladies in the industry… Besides the famously-lovely Tina and Teri (impossible to be around them and not be happy), I also got to meet Linda of Chessie and Me (loved taking pictures of her models!), Charland and her daughter Sydney of Charland Designs (the most clever and witty duo on the planet – I still can't stop laughing), Cece from Threadgatherer (not only does she paint threads, but she has an amazing line of lotions and lip balms), Ann and Pat of R&R Reproductions (my  soul sisters), and Jeanette Douglas of Jeanette Douglas Designs (I do believe we were seperated at birth).

I don't have my photos from the retreat loaded onto my computer just yet, but I can show you the projects I presented. My classes were so much fun, and not one single person threw a tomato (although I may have seen a few people reach into their handbags suspiciously).

    This was my retreat sampler…

    A Yuletide Welcome TP

And this was the project I presented with it, called A Lady's Pin Roll

    ALPR front rolled tp

As you can tell from the scale of the spools, it was a tiny project, meant to hold various sizes of needles and pins, to be thrown into your project bag or purse (in case you're out somewhere and you drop your needle and can't find it – which I have done on more than one occasion).

Or in case you need an emergency safety pin!

It was a really fun project to make, and I hope the attendees enjoyed it as well.

Again, I can't thank you all enough for the kind words I received regarding not only my designs, but also my family and for the loss of our Friday. I felt completely surrounded by friends, despite not having previously met many of you. What a joy the entire retreat was… and rather than wishing I was home with my family, I wished instead that they were in Utah with me! Maybe another time. 🙂

I'll be back soon with pictures from the retreat! Until then, I've got lots of ideas to get down on paper, and lots of laundry to do.

ETA: A Lady's Pin Roll doesn't have a general release date planned, but A Yuletide Welcome will most likely become available in the summer of 2013.

    Spring Break

For Sophie's spring break this year, she begged Mike to take her to Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City, Missouri, so he took a couple of days off work and we loaded up the car and headed out. And since no Stewart trip would be complete without Mike longing to climb every single hill we passed, we had to pull over on the side of the road and let him get it out of his system.

    Tp 1

Needless to say, our road trips to Colorado are a nightmare for me.

Although Sophie has been to Great Wolf Lodge several times, she never tires of it…

    Spring break tp 1

It's full of spouting fountains and spray guns and lounge pools and water slides – some of which you can see behind the hill-climbing duo below…

    Spring break tp 3

    Spring break tp 2

Soph just about lost her bathing suit bottom here… and in case you miss him, Mike is the tall kid with his arms up (most likely hoping to lose his bathing suit bottom)…

    Spring break tp 6

And here is Mike again, making up for all those childhood days of having only a bathtub to splash in…

    Spring break tp 4

The next day was spent at Great Wolf Lodge's MagiQuest, which is a wizardry game in which participants complete various tasks given to them by wise owls and talking trees, in an effort to conquer a mighty dragon in the end. It's sort of like an interactive video game, but instead of a controller, you choose a wand…

    Spring break tp 5

And once you've chosen (purchased) your wand, you can opt to add a topper to it that gives you extra powers…

    Spring break tp 7

Yes, Mike, we know you've always wanted one of these..

    Spring break tp 13

After consulting her Ancient Book of Wisdom, Sophie was off on her adventure…

    Spring break tp 9

    Spring break tp 8

Here she receives instructions from a knight:

    Spring break tp 10

The average length of the game is 4 hours, but after about an hour and a half, I decided to take my leave and get a coffee and settle in with Dutch Beauty in the lobby. Every once in a while, I'd hear Mike and Sophie run by (along with lots of other kids and an occasional parent), exclaiming how they needed "more gold!" or "The Whispering Woods are this way!" or something like that.

When it was just about time to defeat the evil dragon, they came to get me so I could take Mike's picture witness their mastery of the challenge…

    Spring break tp 11

The game took them just under 3 hours, but that was just one of three quests. The others will be completed at a future visit to Great Wolf Lodge, and I know the two are looking forward to it… although Mike expects to get to hold the wand next time.

Spring break was an enjoyable one, but as with every Stewart trip, it's all fun and games until someone gets their eye poked out. And usually that eye belongs to Mike.

    Spring break tp 12

P.S. For those of you who know Mike, you know exactly what I mean by that last sentence. 😉
