Dyeing to Stitch Retreat, Part 2

Welcome back! Here are some more pictures from our retreat weekend, which was an absolutely wonderful time! My classes were so much fun (perhaps I'm only speaking for myself! Ha!), and it was a fabulous time chatting with lots of familiar friends and newly-made ones.

I'm sad to say I didn't get any pictures of the class pieces that the other designers taught, which is surprising, since I had several opportunities to get some. (How did this happen?) But the truth of it is, we were having so much fun laughing and being silly that it didn't occur to me to take any class piece photos, and I didn't have my camera when we were revealing them to those in attendance.

The only ones I have to share with you are mine, which sounds awfully selfish, but I don't mean for it to be. 🙁

The theme for the retreat was It's A Celebration! So I decided to combine two things that I love to celebrate in October: the gorgeous orange of jack o'lanterns and my sweet Sabrina's birthday.

    This is Jack's Bash:

    Jack's Bash tp

    The verse reads:

Here in the rust and autumn bower,
the knobby gourd and bitter flower,
    We merry-make and sing Hooray!
to our friend Jack on his birthday.

(The word "rust" contains an old-style letter s, which looks like a half-crossed lower-case f.)

Nicole Neville stitched the model beautifully and in record time, and I love love love the moulding that Sherri at Total Framing used for it!

The kitted piece that the class actually worked on is called Jack's Birthday Tart, and it accompanied the larger sampler, using all the same threads:

    JBT 13

    IMG_8447

Jack's Bash will be released next fall, and most likely Jack's Birthday Tart will be also. (The tart will probably have a companion or two to go with it.) I thought it was a lot of fun to make, and very easy!

By the way, this was the sunrise that greeted me every morning from the balcony of the hotel room:

    IMG_8443

And as the sun rose higher, the beach grew more crowded…

    IMG_8448

On Saturday evening we had a huge banquet, and each person dressed in something that denoted the era in which they were born. The food was beautifully presented, and Ann and Pat (despite the challenges of the elevators being inaccessible for the better part of the day) did a wonderful job as our hostesses…

What a crazy good time that was! The door prizes were amazing, the cheering was raucus, and the whole room was full of stitchy friends who were relieved that the elevators started working just in time for the party, as the banquet was held on the 11th floor. 🙂

I'd like to thank Ann and Pat and Sybil and Norma and all the wonderful people who helped pull this retreat together. You all are the best!

I'll be back soon with Part 3, which isn't so much the retreat as it is what we did after the retreat was over. See you soon!

Dyeing to Stitch Retreat, Part 1

What a fantastic weekend the retreat was! If you've never been to a Dyeing to Stitch retreat, you've got to plan to attend the next one! It was so much fun, and the time spent with friends will always be a cherished memory for me.

I took lots of pictures to share, so if you can play a soundtrack in your mind of lots of oohing and aahing and clapping and laughing, you'll get an idea of how it all went. What fun we all had!

Here's how it started out, at least for me:

    Photo 4

The retreat was held at the Cavelier Hotel on Virginia Beach, which was lovely! Here are some pictures of the boutique that was set up for the attendees to shop:

Stacy Nash Primitives…(what a sweetheart Stacy is!)

    IMG_8401

(I have to include a photo of her Halloween at Hollyberry Farm to show you what the linen really looks like. For those of you who ordered it kitted, it isn't as gray as the photo appears, but that's the curse that designers deal with – the digital print! The model was fabulous to see in person, though, and I can't wait to get started on mine.)

    IMG_8405

Here's a photo of the gorgeous designs of Bonnie Woomer/The Nebby Needle:

    IMG_8403

(I actually just discovered Bonnie's blog, which will give you a far better idea of how the retreat went than mine will!)

The Purple Thread… (Sharon is an excellent teacher, by the way)(and her boutique table had so much to look at, you saw something different every time you blinked!)

Jeanette Douglas Designs…(my way-too-much-fun Canadian sister, who was also my roomie; I'm still recovering from our 2 am designing-brainstorming session!)…

    IMG_8411

I love Jeanette's imagination, and her new A Most Suitable Name series is so sweet! Alphabet Annie is my favorite, I think…

    IMG_8410

    IMG_8406

    IMG_8408

And of course, Shepherd's Bush has always been a super favorite of mine…(Teri and Tina are a hilarious duo when they get in front of a group, and they're so much fun to spend time with!)

    IMG_8404

    IMG_8424

There was so much to look at, all around the room…

    IMG_8423

(Love, love, love Pat and Ann's hand-dyed trims; the mini rickrack in Cinnamon is my favorite!)

    IMG_8421

    IMG_8412

    IMG_8420

The first night of the retreat was spent learning how to finish a beautiful stitched booklet in our Evening with Friends, taught by Sharon of The Purple Thread. I don't have a photo of the book, but it was absolutely stunning! Each page featured a different design from each designer, and the theme of the book was a celebration of life – from friends to marriage, and everything in between. I'm hoping Pat and Ann will show a photo of it on their blog soon!

I'm not sure which night our Evening with Stacy Nash was, but I believe it was the second night we were there. The weekend went by so fast, it's a blur! Stacy had the sweetest project for us to work on (is there anything of Stacy's that isn't sweet?)…

    IMG_8436

    IMG_8430

    IMG_8432

I think this is a good stopping point! I'll get the rest uploaded soon, so if you'd like to check back, I'll be here! 🙂

I do want to end today's post with saying how much I enjoyed meeting each one of you. I loved spending time at the tables chatting, looking at your photos and your beautiful stitching, and swapping pet stories. It's so much fun to get together with those who are so sweet to sign up for my classes, and I can't thank you enough for your always-warm welcome and kindhearted support. I hope you were all pleased (even if the fabric for Jack's Bash ran out before some of you even knew it was there!), and I especially hope I see you again at a future retreat.

And of course, a huge thank-you to Ann and Pat for the many months they spent putting together such an amazing retreat. It was one of the best weekends ever!

    Mary’s Sampler, Part 3

Here we go, on with the third installment! Those of you stitching Mary's Sampler II will find that you finally have more to stitch than what's on the original version. And so it begins!

Remember to download the PDF links at the bottom of the post to print your pages – do not click on the images themselves! I know this is the third week in a row you've had to hear that, but I just don't want anyone to forget and then be really, really frustrated. Frustration and stitching are not good companions. 🙂

    Release #2: Halloween Delivery

Yesterday I showed you Harvest Delivery, so today it's a new one! This one also debuted at the Dyeing to Stitch retreat this past week, and it's stitched on another lovely, brand new color from Ann and Pat at R&R: Chamomile Tea. As soon as the charts are back from the printer, I'll send it off to my autos and the distributors; I'm heading out of town again tomorrow, so if they're not back today, then they'll go out early next week. I hope you like it!

    P.S. There's a ghost somewhere in the piece. 😉

I've got a few more new ones, but I think I'll space them out a bit and push them closer to November. I hope you're all enjoying this lovely Thursday, and I hope your day includes a bit of stitching time! See you soon, hopefully with pictures from the retreat. It was such a great time!

    Harvest Delivery

What a spectacular time we all had at the Dyeing to Stitch retreat in Virginia Beach last week! I took lots and lots of pictures, and will share them very soon, but first I wanted to get these releases shown to you!

First up is Harvest Delivery, which I debuted at the retreat. The girls at R&R Reproductions were gracious enough to name a fabric for me, and I couldn't be more thrilled! I absolutely love horses, so the name they gave it was Plum Street Paddock – and it's what Harvest Delivery is stitched on!

I will be back tomorrow with the next release for October. These will be off to the distributors soon, and your shop owners should have them right after that.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Wednesday! (That is what day it is, right? I'm still trying to unpack from the retreat, as well as the trip into DC… back to work!)

    Mary’s Sampler, Part 2

How did it go this week? Did everyone get part 1 finished up? I hope you all had an enjoyable time with it, and that you're looking forward to this week's installment! (Thank goodness, I've stitched ahead, because this Sunday I'm in Virginia Beach, teaching at the Dyeing to Stitch retreat!)

Today (or whenever you find the time) you'll stitch the manger and star next to Mary. Remember that although the motifs are the same again this week on both Mary's Sampler I and II, their placement is different, so follow the correct chart!

And another reminder: if you click on the actual image of the page you see, your printer won't like you very well. Be sure and opt for the PDF links that I'll list at the very bottom of the post to print out this week's pages. Have a lovely Sunday!

    Mary’s Sampler, Part 1

I cannot express how overwhelmed I was by the incredible response to this mystery sampler! You all have been so kind and generous with your encouragement, and I am very thankful. And I'm very  excited for all of us to begin!

I worked ahead a week or two, and will continue to do so (hopefully), in order to work out any kinks and give you a heads up to anything I may do differently than what the chart calls for. But again, you're all free to make your own design and color decisions, because this will be your sampler anyway!

If any of you decide to stitch on black fabric, here are a few things to keep in mind (this will apply to those who have never stitched on black before, or have heard how challenging it can be).. stitch in natural light, or use a daylight light bulb (you can find these in Walmart or Target or home improvement stores.. they specifically say "daylight" on them, and emit a whiter light than regular bulbs, which are yellow). A hoop is also helpful for opening up those holes, and I find that placing something white on my lap – like the chart page – is helpful to see through the fabric holes.

As I said, I will be trying to stitch ahead of you; and that being the case, I've already found a change you may want to make if you're stitching on black… I'll list any changes at the bottom of the post each week. If you happen to find any errors or problems with the chart as you're stitching, I'd like to apologize ahead of time. There are definite advantages to having model stitchers who will tell you what does and doesn't work, but in this case, I'm jumping in with everyone else!

Let's begin! And thank you again for all of your kind words this week!

IMPORTANT: The images below will not print properly if you click and print from them. Please use the links provided at the very bottom of each post to download the PDF for printing. You may also choose to use your monitor as your chart and forego any printing at all. (This will allow you to make the chart as large as you need it to be!)

ALSO NOTE: While some motifs may be identical in both samplers, please keep in mind that their placement is different. Remember to check to see that you're printing and following the correct chart each week.

Here is my progress from this week.. I've had to blur out the bits from next week! The changes I made were these:

    1. My particular skein of Portabella was a little too light to be used next to Sea Gull in Joseph and Mary's robes (this doesn't apply to those of you using the original color key!), so I switched to the color Old Hickory for this motif and like it much better.

    2. Mary's hair flows right into her robe on the original key, but on black fabric, the Sea Gull makes her look like she's got gray hair. I changed her hair color back to Espresso Bean/3371 and am satisfied. 🙂

    3. This isn't so much a change as it is an error: I miscounted and stitched Joseph one square too far over to the left. Instead of removing my stitching, I decided to compensate and stitch each of their hands with two Adobe/3773 stitches instead of just one.

As I was saying on Facebook, here are a few answers to some of the emails I've received this week:

    1. Anyone can participate, no matter where you are, as long as you have internet service. There is no need to sign up for anything – just grab your supplies and join in!

    2. The colors I listed originally will work for both Mary's Sampler I and II, but if you're going ot use black linen, I suggest following the substitutions I posted or coming up with something of your own choosing, as the original colors may not show up well on the black fabric.

    3. Sections for both Mary's Sampler I and II will be posted each week. Although they look identical, their placement is different, so print out the chart you want to follow. Both charts will remain on the blog for as long as my blog exists, and will not be published for sale.

    See you tomorrow!

    An Announcement!

Please see the ETA at the bottom of this post…

    Mary's Sampler II Announcement tp

ETA: Both Mary's Sampler and Mary's Sampler II are nearly the same. However, the second version requires a bit more stitching time to complete. Both versions are the same size, but if you'd like a simple quick-stitch project, you may want to opt for the first. If you'd like something a bit busier, then the second version may be the one for you. I hope this helps clear a few things up! 🙂
